Hi everyone,
Appologies that ithe thread is a little bit later than usual...unfortunately I've been bit wrapped up in real life. Anyway...Welcome to the sixth Grocery Challenge of the year. :hello:
If your new month starts early feel free to join this thread, or if you're still working on your May budget, then keep on posting in the May 2010 Grocery Challenge
As always this challenge is to reduce your own grocery budget to levels that you will be pleased with, not forgetting that we always recommend that you stay inside your own comfort levels and take things gently one step at a time. Remember that this is not a competition....it's designed to take you and your grocery spending to a level you are happy with.
If you are new to the challenge I have quoted the advice from Galtizz below which will help you get started.
Please post into this thread for help and advice and support at any time. Good luck to everyone taking part!
For guidelines on posting in this thread please read the second post in this thread.
For everyone's targets and totals for the month please read posts #5 and #6 on this thread.
For the Grocery challenge Recipe Index please see posts #3 and #4 on this thread.
Wishing you all a great month!

Galtizz wrote:I have said this before, but for all the newbies to the challenge;
For the first month I took a guess at the budget but I really had no idea how much I was spending.
I found the best thing is to have a guess the first month but SAVE ALL OF YOUR RECEIPTS (and yes, that does include the ones from the local shop when you run out of milk ), then at the end of the month add them all up and have a look if you were on budget, if not, it doesn't matter because your budget was a guess. For the next month you can use the total of your receipts and take a bit off to get a realistic budget, just shave off as much as you think you can, it could be £1 a week or £20 a week.
If you are currently spending £200 a month don't suddenly drop it to £100 - you'll never do it but if you cut £20 a month off for a few months you'll get there eventually without feeling you're missing out on anything.
You might think you've done everything you can in the first month but someone always comes up with a new idea and, if you try it you often find you save a bit more (unless you are SarahSaver who is an expert at this and could only save more if she turned her back garden into a paddy field and lived on rice ) In the first month I thought, I'm planning meals, I couldn't possibly save any more, but then I started double cooking and freezing, and making soup instead of buying it in tins.
I've been doing this since Feb but only saved ALL of my receipts last month, it has given me a much better idea of where it is all going. Budget for next month is £80 for 2 of us, I'll start on 30/4. I could probably save more, by eating different foods but I can afford to live on £80, I have saved a lot of money since Feb. and I don't waste food or money any more. So I'm happy with my budget.

Morning all
Sorry for being quiet last month *yes I know thats a good thing*
I will try and post regularly this month.... well last month went ok, although our shopping has gone up as we are doing SW , Im sure I have seen quite a few folk mention they have started! -but Im still set to be within my annual budget, and Im loving the SW recipes and best of all "its working" (20lb in 5 weeks):jand Im enjoying it
Anyway -I think we are pretty much set for the week -hope so as I couldn't wedge another pea in the fridges or freezers right now :rotfl:
Dinner tonight Im doing SW Indian curried pork patties with salad and sauted potatoes and onions -I did these the other week and they are nomnonom (and are even better cooked the day before you want them and then re-heated )
Anyway -I hope everyone has a good month.
Pink -hope things calm down for you soon-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
Good morning MrsM and thanks to you, Rosieben and pink for the shiny new thread. Hope you post more often, you always have such useful tips. Have you managed to get going with the potio allotment this year?
My month got off to a flying start yesterday with an NSD, though I have started a long shopping list to take advantage of a £6 off £40 spend coupon for MrT and £5.50 worth pf ouchers. So if I get close to the amount it will be a good saving. Will have to make sure I don't waste any of it on rubbish. OH has now been out of work for 4 months so things are pretty tight and I need to make every penny work hard.0 -
Please put me down for £80 this month - thank you.Life is not a dress rehearsal.0
-
Hi folks - can I please be included for £130 not including alcohol and dog food? I need to make more effort with this at the mo.Many thanks - will be popping in for inspiration and motivation.0
-
Hi everyone
I`ve not totalled up May`s receipts yet but my June challenge starts today so MrsM could you please put me down for £200 for June.
The kitchen will be finished soon and i need to unpack all the boxes and see what we are running out of, i ran things down a lot so i need some serious shopping this month to bring the levels back up to what i`m used to hence the extra spends, on a better note the freezer is rammed full and once i`m a bit more organised i can make a new contents list and use some of it all up.
A huge thankyou to Pink, Rosieben and Mrs M for all the work that you put into the GC :T:T
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0 -
Hi - Can I join the thread for June please? I spend Wayyyyy too much on food so will probably spend more than most of you this month but I reckon that I should aim for £400 for June (including household stuff), which would be about just over half what I spent in May:o. I have six £10 off a £50 spend vouchers from Sainsburys (just came randomly in the post) which I want to use up (one for each of the coming 6 weeks). Sainsburys is more expensive that Asda but I have been on the Sainsburys website this morning and worked out which products are on special offer so I will try and build my meal plans and spending around those. I look forward to reading all your hints and tips!Jane
