Thank you for such a useful posting. Please could you post the recipe for letnils with mint and garlic. Sounds an unusual combo. I've done lentils with cinnamon before which I loved and OH hated. Oh well!!

    Week 1 Shopping List

    Garlic
    4 red chillies
    fresh coriander
    2 x 420g cans chickpeas
    1 lime
    olive oil
    fresh parsley
    4 white pitta breads
    500g Minced Pork
    4 x Streaky Bacon Rashers
    Lettuce
    Tomatoes x 6
    Burger Buns x 4
    Whole Chicken
    Potatoes
    Sausages x 6
    Tinned Tomatoes x 2
    Tin of Beans x 1
    Pasta
    White Onion
    Red Onion
    Tinned Salmon
    Creamed Horseradish Sauce
    Fresh Dill
    Eggs x 9
    New Potatoes
    Back Bacon x 6 rashers
    Spring Onions
    Cheddar Cheese 125g
    500g Minced Beef
    200g Kidney Beans
    Soured Cream
    Lemons x 2
Veg of your choice x 4
    Chilli Powder
    Ground Cumin
    Mayonnaise
    Worcestershire Sauce

I think thats everything, I would estimate for the first time this may cost you about £30 if you had to buy everything on the list, but you would then be building up your storecupboard and wouldn't need to buy certain items next time. I would also say instead of getting pots of fresh herbs from the supermarket, plant some from the garden centre in your garden and you will always have them!

    Hummus and Garlic Pitta Breads

    2 garlic cloves
    2 red chillies deseeded
    bunch fresh coriander
    2 x cans chickpeas drained
    Juice of one lime
    4 tbsp of olive oil
    salt and pepper to taste

Place garlic, chillies and coriander into a food processor and whizz until finely chopped, add chickpeas and whizz again. Add lime juice and olive oil whilst the processor is running until the mixture is a paste. Season to taste.

    3 tbsp olive oil
    2 garlic cloves crushed
    2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
    4 white pitta breads

Mix the garlic, oil and parsley and season well. Grill one side of the pitta bread for about 40 seconds and then turn over and lightly score the other side. Spread with parsley, garlic and oil and grill for another minute.

    Serve with hummus and salad.
