Washing plates in cold water
Has anyone washed plates, cutlery, pots and pans etc in cold water. What I am asking is washing up liquid effective in cold water to remove grease etc. Looking for ways to save boiling a kettle each evening. Since I turned my heating off I only have the hot water on tap once a week when I turn the boiler on for my bath etc.

What to use surplus spuds for?
Thanks to our potato patch exceeding all expectations, we are currently looking at more spuds than we will be able to eat before they start sprouting. Unless, that is, we use them for something other than chipping and mashing! But what else can we do with them, given that all we have with which to cook them is the oven…

Electric Blanket v Heated Throw?
Hello everyone, I'm not sure if this is the place to put this question, so apologies if it is not - feel free to move it to the most appropriate place, Admins. My electric blanket gave up the ghost earlier this year (RIP lovely blanket - you have me 20 years good service!) and I am looking to replace it, but heated throws…

My kitchen sink is slower to empty. I thought I had read in a book that washing soda can be used but I can't find the book now. I have a packet of washing soda but no idea how to use it for this. Can anyone help please. Any other suggestions to clear also appreciated. Thanks.

Heating while away from home
Looks like I'll need to head away from home for a few weeks later on this month. I'll need to leave the heating on both to make sure nothing freezes if there's a cold snap and to stop the house getting musty. Of course it's getting more expensive, though! What would you do with the heating? On a shorter trip I'd normally…

Fix trainer insoles - worth it or not?
I have 2 pairs of trainers which have broken insoles. Any ideas on how to fix them? I can't walk on them without pain. Or is the best idea to replace them? The soles are fine by the way.

Weekly Flylady Thread 26th September 2022
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole…

Cooking for one, replacement for main oven?
Living on my own and looking at what it costs to use my main oven, I am looking at a possible alternative. During the week I mainly use my oven for a pizza, garlic bread, lasagne or pasta bake. But come the weekend I do like to cook a Sunday roast, so something that will accommodate a chicken or a joint of meat and then…
