Mental Capacity and Divorce
Two questions, if I may... Can an Attorney instigate divorce proceedings on behalf of the donor, if it would be in their best financial interests to do so? On the flip side, can someone instigate divorce proceedings against someone who lacks capacity, with or without them having a PoA in place? Thanks

Feeling torn about family trip
I'm in my late 30s, have a brother who is five years older and have parents in their mid-70s. In the last few years, my parents have discovered family who emigrated to the Netherlands from the UK and so have been over to visit them a few times. The relationship is quite distant, it's like my mum's second cousin. My parents…

Power of attorney - when to register with the banks etc?
I have a power of attorney for my parents. They both have all their faculties still, which is great. I'm just wondering do I register the powers of attorney with their banks now, or wait until any loss of faculty comes? Grateful for your thoughts/experiences.

GCSE English - Tips?
Hey guys, My nephew is due to sit his GCSEs in around 5 weeks or so. On the whole he's expected to broadly pass most subjects with 5-7 grades. However, English, both language and literature, he's on course for a 3. Less than ideal! I'm trying to find out what I can do to help him out. I'm no expert myself, but managed B in…

They have now changed their policy to state that the 15 hours funding will only apply to full day sessions IF your child attends nursery for at least 2 full days Can they do this? There isnt anything in the terms and…

We have two children aged 20 & 23. We had been living in the family home since 2005 and husband got a mortgage to buy the house from the council in 2022 with…

Marriage Allowance when separated
Hi all. I have a query I was hoping to ask HMRC but it is impossible to get through to anyone. My parents got married in the 80s but have been separated for the past 20 years (they never divorced or had any kind of legal separation). As such, I am wondering if that means they are still eligible for the marriage allowance…

Marriage tax allowance
Hi everyone. I got married in 2016 and we've had a child in 2021, my partner stopped working and I claimed marriage tax allowance. We were successful and my tax code changed to 1389m and we got a cheque through the post but a couple of weeks later we had to pay that money back! Is it me or is it a waste of time backdating…

Gifting and DDOA etc
I understand that if a parent gives their gown-up child a large amount of money this could cause problems if the parent then needs to go into a care home in the near future. What happens if a seemingly innocuous item is discovered in the parent's house, which arguably belonged to the child originally so the child takes it…

What age did you give children chocolate Easter eggs till?
Just curiosity really and partly due to a story I read elsewhere. Unsure if this has ever been discussed here I continued to get Easter eggs till quite a late age, well into my 20s, and used to get some Easter money too. I always put this down to my sister being 7 years younger than me and relatives not wishing to miss me…

2 year childcare eligibility for people on work visa
As an immigrant on a Skilled Worker visa, one of the conditions is the restriction from accessing public funds. However, clarity on what exactly constitutes a public fund is elusive, as government websites do not provide clear definitions. Regarding childcare funding, while it's stated that individuals on this visa cannot…

If i own less than a quarter of a house with an ex partner should i pay half the of the bills?
Long story short: Myself and my ex partner own a house that we originally purchased to rent-out, or 'do up' and sell. It wasn't the home we lived in, it was separate to that. I'd always paid 50% of the council tax and all bills even though i only own 25% of the house (ex owns 75%, obviously). I did this because generally…

Childcare Costs 2024
The expanded childcare funding provided by the government is a welcomed relief to most parents, who are struggling and/or giving up employment due to the abhorrent costs of childcare. That said, I feel it's being exploited by childcare providers to cash in. The scheme that was expanded to help all working parents of 9…

Free childcare question
Hi, My son (3) goes to nursery 1 day per week, he’s there from 8.30-4.30, so 8 hours in total per week of the 15 hours of free childcare. Following the free childcare announcement his nursery have informed me that their funding only runs 8.30-4 and therefore I still have to pay for an additional hour each week. Which for…

Take ex off deeds or wait until house sold in divorce?
Hi, My ex husband has agreed that I can have all the equity from the house sale in our divorce (very little but I am resident parent of our daughter). Things have been quite high conflict between us - and I worry that it will come to the house being sold and he’ll change his mind. Can I take him off the deeds now and will…
