Marriage tax allowance

Hi everyone.

I got married in 2016 and we've had a child in 2021, my partner stopped working and I claimed marriage tax allowance. We were successful and my tax code changed to 1389m and we got a cheque through the post but a couple of weeks later we had to pay that money back! Is it me or is it a waste of time backdating it just to pay it back ??? Help because something didn't seem right with it

how much do you earn ?
I believe you are only eligible if you are not a higher rate tax payer.

And as an aside it would have been your partner who would have claimed the allowance, not you - they give authority for some of their allowance to be passed to you, not the other way round.

What year or years did you claim for?

Are you a higher rate taxpayer? If you are then you cannot benefit from the transfer allowance.

HMRC process now and check later, so any claim would be processed without checking. Checking is done later.

The same happened to me and my husband. And on top my husband pays higher tax even though we are on lower income bracket. Makes 0 sense. But what can you do really.
