No bread flour
Recently I have struggled to get any bread flour to stock up my supplies, and I was wondering if I can substitute it with plain flour instead. I only really make bread or pizza dough in my bread maker but have always followed the recipe from the book that came with the machine.

Cooking multiple things in the oven
I keep reading the tip of cooking multiple things when the oven is on, but I have a couple of questions. How do you avoid the smells transferring to each food if I was baking something like flapjacks and beef stew? Also, I've only ever make a recipe then put it straight into the oven - how does it work if you are making…

Weekly Flylady Thread 29th August 2022
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole…

Old Style Daily Sunday 04 September 2022
Afternoon all. Peace reigns at the temporary Gers Towers. Four family members gone home to England, two others out for the day, one at school fair, SIL and I the only ones here. 🎉 I sat out in the sun for a couple of hours until it got too hot. It was very sad when the English contingent left, I had a little weep as the…

Cooking hard pears
I have been given a carrier bag of small and extremely hard pears from someone's garden. Usually, I would leave shop-bought pears to go ripe before eating. However, the lady said I should poach them. Any suggestions?

Are Remoskas worth it?
I’m considering getting a Remoska, I understand they use far less electricity than a conventional oven but am wondering if it would be worthwhile or an expensive piece of kitchen equipment that doesn’t get used. I’ve noticed that there don’t seem to be many recipe books available, there is one on Lakeland but the only…

Monthly Meal Planning
I know there's threads where people post their meal plans, but how do you go about doing a monthly one? Without repeating a lot of meals. I want to cut down shopping and oven use over winter, so thinking one big monthly shop and one day of batch cooking with the oven, the rest of the month I'll use the airfryer and slow…

Any recomendations on cat food and litter
I know some might feel pets are a luxury but both of mine are rescue cats. First one acquired when a litter was abandoned next to a neighbour's wheelie bin. And the other from cats protection with the idea it would be company for first one at a time when I when I was still working. (sadly they hate one another and spend…

Energy saving: what’s really worth it, and what isn’t
I’ve been doing the calculations and I think these are the things that really make a difference to our bills, and the stuff that just makes you miserable for very little gain. I know for some people even the pennies count - but some ‘tips’ I’ve seen are actually actively unhelpful (like putting your washing machine on the…

Housekeeping money - am I stuck in a time warp ?
We have housekeeping money; we always have done since we decided to get to grips with our finances. We take out the cash on payday and I retain the cash in the housekeeping purse. When it's gone, it's gone and it doesn't get topped up from the main bank account. If I chose to buy something out of my discretionary spending…

What size stove top pressure cooker?
Morning all. Family of five. It would be mostly for one pot meals and batch cooking dry pulses, however hopefully the meat eaters in the house will use it to cook joints, chickens etc. The promotional photos for all of them show a whole chicken in the basket, but what size would we need to cook a large chicken or joint?
