A Bag of Flour
Hi I've got a 1.5kg bag of white flour to use up this week, what shall I do with it? I thought about making some sort bread but my dilemma is that I don't know which is cheaper to run, the breadmaker or the oven - or even the slow cooker if I can find a recipe. Or should I do a pile of plain biscuits or scones, but would…

Vegan Christmas Selection Box
I hope this is the best place to ask. I'm hoping to find a nice Selection Box for a guest on Christmas Day. Cadbury's etc. are probably not Vegan and I'll be really pleased to have any suitable alternative - just a wee gift. If possible it would be good to be able to purchase at any of the big supermarkets/locally, thank…

Archive.org - Cookery Book collection
Archive.org is a wonderous collection of all sorts of media, and amongst them is a large collection of old cokkery books. This link should take you there. There are around 12,000 to go at, many American, but I particularly liked the "Glasgow Cookery Book". This site is free to use, but you may make a donation if you like.…

Cooking Quorn Roast in an air fryer
Hi, I wondered if anyone has done this and whether it was successful? I contacted the company and they haven't tried it! I've been enjoying trying out cooking various items in my bargain air fryer, but after finding out it is not good for drying out slightly damp salt (popcorn style explosions!) I am looking for a little…

Weekly Flylady Thread 24th October 2022
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. - BACK TO BASICS WEEK What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need…

Blackouts for beginners
After looking at the news reports regarding the potential for planned blackouts and being clueless about how to prepare for them in a sensible measured way, I thought that doing a post requesting hints and tips may be helpful for myself and others. What essential items would you purchase?

Save time and money
When you have some spuds to use up peel, Blanche and cut up and freeze to throw into those quick throw in the slow cooker recipes for stews. Bulk up with pulses such as lentils and barley and if you’re only cooking for two you’ll often find you have an extra portion to freeze for a time when you’re busy or too tired to…

Recommendations on how to eat well on a budget?
My partner and I are looking to eat healthier but are struggling to find ways to eat better that doesn't cost significantly more money and doesn't rob us of the little time we have after we get back from work. Does anyone have any tips for eating well on a budget? Or any recommendations for a decent UK cookbook or…

Give me a kick up the bum so I cook dinner and don't get a takeaway please
Having a heck of a day - still working, DH 100 miles away at a funeral, going away first thing tomorrow and my brain is trying to tell me to get a takeaway (can't really afford it). Am only planning to make carbonara so it's not even that hard but I'm exhausted (I do have fibro, slipped discs and various other health…

Lifespan of treacle?
I have unearthed a jar of black treacle. BBE April 2018. It looks ok, smells ok. I can't see why treacle would go off. Unless it got contaminated with breadcrumbs etc. Should I risk it?

World Pasta Day: share your MoneySaving pasta recipes
It's World Pasta Day so at MSE Towers we've been thinking about MoneySaving ways to cook with pasta. Last night we didn't have much food in the house and my partner and I were too tired to pop out to the shops so we cooked up some pasta with bacon and a cheese sauce. It wasn't quite a classic carbonara sauce, but it was…
