How do retirees plan tax around SIPP withdrawals?
I recently retired early at 56 and got all my savings/pensions in order. I operate a cash ladder type strategy for the early years. ie I am holding around 4 years of living expenses in high interest easy access savings, fixed term bonds of varying duration and dividend paying ETFs/stocks. I also have global index stock…

Sink distance from Electric Hob
Hi The builders who are installing our kitchen have moved a sink location from the original design without informing us, because they said it would provide more counter space. Whilst true the sink is now very close to the electric hob and oven.....is it safe to do this? Its only about 30cm from the edge of sink to the edge…

Making a large gift and IHT implications?
I plan to leave my niece, £200K as a large gift while I'm still living.I'm aware of the 7-year taper relief rule affecting this should I die before 2032. Would this gift adversely affect me if I continued to make the £3K yearly tax-free gift allowance?... and would it leave me open to being taxed?

Best short/medium term home for £200k as higher rate taxpayer
I’m in the lucky position to turn 55 in a few weeks and be able to take my pension and start to enjoy the fruits of a long corporate career. Given I’ve taken an enjoyable p/t role then with that + £30k pa pension I’ll be on the cusp of higher rate tax before any interest payments. I’ve a £200k TFLS due that I’d like to put…

Where to buy kitchen units?
I want to renew a small kitchen. I only need 3 base units and 2 wall units. Plus some worktop. Where's a good place to pick this up flat-pack, off the shelf? I costed this out at Wickes, and it comes to £1000. I did the same at DIY kitchens, and it's similar. I was, naively, expecting more like £50-100 per unit, but the…

Fixed rate savings vs gilts
Good evening . I am a retired person and my situation is that I have £85000 saved in a fixed rate bond and a similar amount in a cash ISA (also fixed rate). My wife also mirrors those savings with her own. I also have 50k invested in premium bonds which since I acquired them in April have produced rather disappointing…

Moda Furnishings Sub-Standard Product Quality With Worthless 7 Year Guarantee
We spent a considerable amount of money on a supposedly UV resistant Moda Furnishings rattan style 8 seat table & chairs in November 2021. Last Summer we noticed a couple of rattan strips had broken, this Summer (2025) there are multiple strips broken on both the table and the Lazy Suzan. My guess is that the glass…

Partners wanting to make a 1st time property purchase.
Martin's podcast of 3July 25 indicates that 2 partners, both having a LISA, can both get bonus when buying jointly a 1st time property. (Assuming of course they meet property value requirements.) If one has a HTB ISA and the other a LISA - is this still the case; what if they both have a HTB ISA - again, does this dual…

Baggage left behind
I’ve been lucky to have countless overseas holidays over the years, predominantly problem free. However twice in the last 18 months I’ve had suitcases deliberately and knowingly left by airlines, just so that they could depart within their time slot. The compensation payable for delayed baggage is much less ( or not at…

Euro Car Parks / DCB Legal – 2025 Defence to Old Debt Claim
Good evening, I have received a letter from DCBL ltd for the well know sum of £170 regarding a PCN issued by Eurocarparks back in 2020, September. Reason for it was overstaying by 10 minute, or so, in a petrol station. I believe I eventually paid it, but cannot say for sure. I have no trace pf payment and threw away a…

Off street parking and PTAL 5 zone
I am looking at a new build in London that has access for vehicles and enough space for parking 2-3 cars off street. But I just found out that the site was classed as PTAL 5, which according to Google means that car parking is not possible. This is mentioned in the planning application for the new build. They say that the…
