No standing charge?
Given that Ofgem have tried (and failed) to “simplify” tariffs, do you see a case to bring back zero standing charge tariffs, where the supplier recovers their costs purely from the energy sold? This could keep the price down for low users and make high users contribute more, incentivising the need to reduce usage.

Phantom house survey
Any retired surveyors (or bankers) on here? Five years or so ago, a friend bought a house in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbys, with a loan from HSBC. The bank's survey (among other things) said NO SUBSIDENCE. Recently, he has been doing some renovations and invited a structural engineer around to check something. The engineer…

Looking at DIY probate
I recently lost my father a week ago, and I’m staring at the probate/IHT forms feeling daunted. My mother is still alive, but won’t be any help with any of this (we’re both named as executors but she wants me to sort it all as she’s not technical at all in respect of computers). I’ve spent the last week waiting for the…

Car finance mis-selling claim telephone calls
Regarding the mis-selling of car finance that has been heavily advertised. I logged a claim over 3 years ago, but, no doubt due to the advertised opportunities, I am being inundated with telephone calls from companies wanting to act on my behalf. As I type this it is around 3pm on a weekday afternoon and already today I…

Frozen smart meter
We have smart meters from Scottish power. Both electric and gas are pay as you go. Over 2 years ago our electric meter reading froze, and has not recorded any increase in our usage since, so we have essentially been getting free electricity since then. It was reported at the time, and they said they would send an engineer…

Self assessment/ lump sum to Sipp
I just made a lump sum payment of £4800 net into my Sipp over and above my usual monthly contributions, I may or may not do the same next year (26-27) but it’s quite likely. I’m a self employed sole trader and will start getting a military pension next month, which presumably will be under PAYE. Should still be basic rate…

uSwitch power hours
First I would like to say 👋as I'm new to this forum. Has anyone done the uSwitch 5 hours weekend free electric before? I've signed up for it but notice that if you are already opted in to a similar one with your energy company you have to opt out of that because you are automatically registered with uSwitch and can't be in…

Is the Uber One subscription worth it?
Uber’s subscription service offers savings (and cashback) on taxis, trains, flights, groceries and takeaways. It usually costs £4.99/mth, but many people are being offered long free trials, from two weeks up to a whole year. It's a rare subscription that can actually SAVE you money instead of wasting it. Read the full…

Is fitting a water meter compulsary?
Hello all,I've recently had a letter from Thames Water stating that we need to contact them to arrange a date to fit a water meter in our home. We've always been happy not to have a meter fitted as we use a fair amount of water for health reasons, but the phrasing of this letter makes it sound like this is a mandatory…

Can a 16 year old join work pension scheme?
Hi. I’m new to the forum so I hope I’m doing this correctly. My soon to be 17 year old son has a part-time job with a well known craft supply retailer. He asked if he could join the pension scheme and they said he couldn’t. His core contract is for 12 hours per week at £12.21 per hour. He also does some extra shifts during…

Moneda Capital Warning

The bank they claimed to be working with has confirmed that they have no contractual relationship with them but interestingly Moneda Capital has now amended their advertising. Although they are still targeting social media…

Proof of Purchased ISA Product (online application)
Before I get in to my issue I want to say that mistakes have been made on our side (namely, possibly not checking in enough detail when the account was opened, and missing emails because so much bumph was sent). This is the issue:- In October 2023 I, and my husband, applied for a 2 year fixed ISA on line. A product that…

Is it a good idea to fix now before the October price cap?
Octopus have offered a fixed tariff for the next 12 months. Being able to predict what I'll pay is really important to me, especially in the current climate. Is it worth fixing now or should we wait until the price cap is dropped to see if the tariffs drop at all - or are they more likely to rise? Thank you.

Please clarify LATE FEES applied at the moment by energy firms (ONLY pre-Warrant stage)
I was looking at articles from 2022 that gave me this overview about debt recovery fees charged by various energy companies, at default stage (I am specifically asking about PRE-ACTION stage only). This is what I found: EDF Energy can charge £10 for customers with an overdue balance of £50 or more that remains unpaid 28…
