Housekeeping money - am I stuck in a time warp ?
We have housekeeping money; we always have done since we decided to get to grips with our finances. We take out the cash on payday and I retain the cash in the housekeeping purse. When it's gone, it's gone and it doesn't get topped up from the main bank account. If I chose to buy something out of my discretionary spending…

What size stove top pressure cooker?
Morning all. Family of five. It would be mostly for one pot meals and batch cooking dry pulses, however hopefully the meat eaters in the house will use it to cook joints, chickens etc. The promotional photos for all of them show a whole chicken in the basket, but what size would we need to cook a large chicken or joint?

Weekly Flylady Thread 22nd August 2022
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on
the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is
often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to
provide the support we all need and to make the whole…

O/S Daily Saturday August 27th...
Morning...Up stupid early [considering what time I went to bed] again. I'd better go get some vitamin D tablets or something, I'm not getting enough sleep which is evidenced by my napping at the drop of a hat later in the day. Anyway, enough complaining, today is sunny and I have a lunch with two friends then a meet up…

Quick £12 saving for Readly subscribers
I hadn't actually noticed the monthly sub had just gone up to £10 from £8 but out of curiosity pressed the Cancel Sub button on my account page. Immediately came up with a 'please don't go - we'll give you six months at the old £8 rate if you commit to staying for another six months' page. Probably worth doing the same…

Energy Saving Cooking Ideas?
Good Morning, I haven't been here in so long, life is so very busy. I hope everyone is well. I am looking for some help and I thought this would be the best place to ask! My oven is costing a fortune to run. I have a slow cooker which I do use but probably not enough. We had a George Foreman which stopped working this…

Creating a hostile environment … for flies
Each flat in my block has their own food waste container. We then empty these into a dedicated wheelie bin which is emptied weekly. Despite all requests some people are putting out bags that not tied tight shut. Result: a weekly crop of maggots. I wash the bin out every week with boiling water. I then disinfect it, in the…

Refermenting wine
Hi all. I collected around six kilo of Blackberries and bought all the needed stuff to ferment it. The yeast I used was a fast ferment and only seems to have taken a few days. I strained all the spent Blackberries but I seem to have put too much water to it. If I purchased a small red wine concentrate and added more sugar…

Gigantes Plaki
I'm wondering if anyone has an ideas or perhaps someone who is good at Greek cooking can help.I've tried various recipes for this Greek dish from bbcgoodfood to olivemagazine and also websites that purport to be authentic greek cooking. It's a great dish and economical. However none of these recipes I've tried actually…

A level English Literature online?
I’m pretty much housebound for a few months, and wondered if I could study A Level Literature online. Google brought up loads of adverts for courses costing £800+ I’m 60+, not on any benefits, and bored!

Blind Scouse (veggy stew)
This is better made a day in advance, as flavours enhance more. This is a thick “stick to your ribs”consistency. Probably came over as Irish stew, but in Liverpool became blind (as you can’t see any meat) scouse. Ingredients potatoes carrots swede onions leeks (optional) 2 oxo cubes (I use beef but you could use vegetarian…
