KW challenge
Not sure if this is the right place or if anyone would like to join or if it’s being done already??? My son has recently moved out and we have challenged each other to use less electricity than the other. Taking readings every Sunday to see who uses the least that week. Thought others may want to add their readings and it…

Adapting sandals to fit swollen feet
MiL has very swollen feet. ATM she has one very old and tatty pair of sandals we can fit onto her feet, but only just. She also has a very smart pair of white sandals, worn once, which I don't think we'd get done up now. These sandals cross over at the front, where they are stitched together. Then there's a strap around…

Learn to Cook Frugal Style
Hoping to learn to cook frugal style! I’m not confident with cooking or shopping for food to cook. Hoping to develop confidence with cooking in an ‘old-style’ cooking way - planning frugal meals - and I’m hoping people may be able to join in or support if you’re a pro (a pro being someone who cooks!) Where to start - I…

Weekly Flylady Thread 25th July 2022
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the
US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's
boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately,
necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to
make the whole…

Blancmange - how to make at home
I was looking to buy the old fashioned blancmange powder. Haven't had it for years but fancy some. Two local supermarket web sites don't list. Is it still available? Does anyone know how to make it from scratch and what ingredients are required please.

Old Style Daily Saturday 30 July 2022
Morning folks. There's been heavy rain overnight, still lots of dense white low-lying clouds which doesn't bode well. Today I'll finish off clearing out behind the spare bed, then I'm heading up to Oban to collect an order which should have been in on Thursday. When I was waiting for it I got a text to say that it was…

What is the best way to dispose of…
Double cream that is growing black mould? I don’t want to pour it down the sink, if possible, if that would block the pipes. - Pip. (Thought we could do with a thread about disposing of things that aren’t straightforward “chuck in compost bin”. No bodies, please.)

Electric blanket
Hi, This is my first time posting here although I have been a reader for a while and have found so many useful tips here that I wondered if I could ask about electric blankets? I've seen them mentioned a few times here and I think they would be a really good idea for us to use while sitting on the sofa in the evenings, to…

Appliance insurance...
Am I better paying for my appliance insurance, or saving the premium each month in case anything breaks down? Washer / dryer cover is £15/m for 12m including a callout last year. Oven is £6.46. Fridge freezer is £7.65, so a total of £29.11
