VED on electric cars
From April 2025 this will rise from zero to £190 (or more?). I have a BEV, currently taxed to May 2025. Is there any reason why I should not declare SORN sometime in March 2025 (at a point when I don't need to use the car for a couple of days) and then retax it, I assume still at £0, until February 2026. This should put…

Problems in updating driver's licence
Hey there Trying to assist someone who needs to get their driver's licence updated. Double whammy - she's married and she's moved. Easy enough but she is not a UK citizen and doesn't want to send her original documents in case they get lost. Is there a way to do this without sending the original documents? I couldn't quite…

Courtesy Car availability
I'm with LV. I had an accident - wild animal strike (they count it as my fault). Is that always the case? Also the car has been off the road for 4 days now, but the courtesy car is provided only while the car is in the garage for repair. Is this usual practice? They have given me a hire car at no cost (yesterday, after…

Evidence for car insurance claim
Hi, Does anybody know if a garage report of damage to a car can be used as evidence in a car insurance claim? We've had conflicting information from the insurance company; one lady said yes, it can be and she'd send it to the other party's insurerers but when we rang for an update a different person said no, it couldn't be…

Car insurance excess insurance
After an accident I now have a hire car. They are charging me £10/day insurance. I agreed as i have a £500 excess - I already owe £500 for my initial claim and I dont need another excess payout on the hire car if I have an accident in that. Someone suggested it would be cheaper if I take out hire car excess insurance and…

Tyre pressure warning lights up, tyres are fine
Hey all, I have a 23' Seat Ibiza FR with 9k miles on it. The low tyre pressure warning for all 4 tyres started to light up every now and then. Mainly after I drive fast , 70-75mph for extended period of time. I check my tyres , they are all fine , I reset the warning on the screen and its fine for a while then after few…

Questionable 'news' about fines for incorrectly set car clock
I have just been told by someone that I need to remember to change the clock in my car when the clocks go back on Sunday. This is because if the Police stop me and my clock is not correct, then I can be fined and receive 3 penalty points. This sounds like sensational fake news created by a newspaper and I have said so, but…

2gether Breakdown cover
I have had a terrible experience with 2gether. My wife and 2 kids had a tyre blowout in motorway on Monday. Was on hold for 80 minutes only to be told by a rude call handler as it’s a day camper it is not valid and the insurance is voided. I have checked the policy and can not see this mentioned at all. Any advice please?…

Advive sought on pursuing Servicing Stop in courts
I am helping my friend who appears to have been overcharged by Servicing Stop (SS) and would be grateful for any advice regarding a claim against them in court. They did work on her car that, contrary to their "best price guarantee", cost some £400 more than the (Toyota) main dealer would have charged. We appear to have…

Carriage of goods for hire and reward Insurers
Before I complete the war and peace requested info on the 'compare' type websites, does anyone have any recommendations for cheap-but-ok van insurers specialising in the above? I'm asking because the last time I completed one of these things whilst looking for a car insurance quote it appeared on my credit file which…

Claiming for hire car - non fault claim - any experience?
Hi all, Someone crashed into our car this weekend (Mercedes V-class 8 Seater), so I am perusing a non-fault claim. My insurance does not have Hire Car cover - we have 4 kids, three of them are in child seats and in addition we need a double buggy, so a small 3/5dr hatchback wouldn't be useful. My intention is to hire a…

Break down cover for a camper? Ouch...
Getting stung here trying to get 'simple' (so I thought) break down cover for my micro-DIY van camper. Not talking one of these big ugly leviathan Sprinters. Pretty much every quote I have has a caveat saying no campers. Really sucks. We're talking £25 per year policies for my vehicle in usual 'van' guise to having to…

New Car Tax rates in April 2024
I bought a low emissions petrol car after a lot of research and was
pleasantly surprised to find that my Vehicle Excise Duty was only
£30.00 per annum because the emissions are only 114gms per litre.
This is a huge incentive for those will little money and also saves
the planet. However, I now see that the government is…

Should I keep my no-fault write off (category S) car?
I wonder if I can get some advice.... We were in an accident the other week, which was not our fault. Another car drove into the side of ours. The damage did not seem extensive (we've used the car since), but we've just heard that the insurance assessors have deemed it not worth paying to repair (Category S) We've been…

Best way to buy an almost new car…
Hi, I’ve never bought cars on PCP before, and my car is now 18 years old and I’m looking to buy a nearly new car. (I’ll probably not go for brand new as that seems extravagant to me). Can anyone help with pros and cons of different ways to purchase please? Thanks in advance

Driving licence renewal with passport
Hi. My driving licence is due for renewal in December 2024. My passport expiry date is February 2025. Issue date 10 years last September. Am I right in assuming my passport is valid to renew my driving licence ? In other words, unlike travel, it's the expiry date that's the important one? Many thanks.
