Used Car purchase advice

Hi folks

I need a wee bit of advice on the purchase of a 6 yr old SEAT MII with 42000 miles on it.

It's current status as follows:

It's tax was up on 31 July
I have new owner slip VC5, don't have log book
MOT up at end of December, last MOT Dec 23  exempted last year

Car was delivered to me on Friday as was unable to collect it

It's been 14 years since I've purchased a car so I'm a bit out of touch with the process lol

Tried to insure the car online yesterday but getting messages saying it can't be processed.

When I go to tax the car online it's saying it can't be processed.

I've been told that I need to go to the post office to tax the car, so when I phone the post office and I've been advised that I need the car insured before it's taxed, however I can't get it insured.

I then read on the Gov.uk website that to tax the car I need proof of MOT which I don't have just a screenshot and new keeper certificate which I do have.

I feel as though I'm stuck in a loop.

I tried to get a duplicate MOT certificate however MI Direct don't seem to have that facility only the .gov.uk website.

Any helpful advice would be appreciated ☺️☺️

    Mot: go to https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

that’ll tell you if there’s a valid mot

    then you can tax it

Thanks, will a screenshot of this suffice if I take it to the post office?

You should be able to get insurance with or without the car being taxed.  But many insurance companies require the car to be registered in your name, or a close relative.  Has the registration process gone through to make you the new registered keeper?  These days, it can be done online.

So start be making sure the car is registered to you.
    Then get the insurance.
    Then get it taxed.
Then do the MOT when it's due.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Thanks, it was formally transferred to me on 14th Aug, one day before delivery.  On the day of delivery I received the green V5C slip as the new registered owner, however I don't yet have the log book.

How has it been "exempted" from MOT...? Because last MOT 20 months ago - nope, that's expired.

V5C/2 new keeper slip is normal.
Tax is refunded on keeper change anyway.

Taxing the car online requires MOT, but doesn't check insurance - that's an ongoing thing, all the time the car's taxed.

Has the previous keeper changed the plate, and given you an old V5C/2 rather than the new one with the correct plate on?

Go to https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - does it come up with the correct car, and is MOT green?
What's the V5C issue date, and does it tally with the slip you have (the date is on the end of the issue number)?

    Hi

The MOT exemption thing seems to have been a NI only thing.

    https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/guide-booking-your-mot-vehicle-test#toc-1

I'm based in NI, the car I bought was registered in 2019 and was last MOTd in 2023

I checked it's MOT status and it still it's still valid.

The previous keeper was officially the car dealership, i.e. Charles Hurst.

Is that because the first not is due after 4 years in ni rather than the normal 3 yrs in the uk?

    Hi

The car was MOT'd after it's first four 4 years in December 2023, and in normal circumstances would be MOT'd every year after that,   however there was an exemption launched for newer models of cars post 2019 due to an MOT backlog caused by COVID.

Therefore it didn't undergo an MOT in 2024.
