afternoon all,

I'm looking for a new to me used car. looking at a diesel estate but stuck on what make/model to punt for. I'm looking at Skoda Superb, Octavia, Volvo V70 or Ford Mondeo. I'll have at most £6k, what do any motoring experts suggest. Anything on the makes above I should look for or avoid?

Cheers in advance

What is your reasoning for going for a diesel? Not a bad choice if you are doing a lot of long distant driving, bad choice if you are mainly doing short hops.

I'm doing 2/3 long trips a month. Plus needing I would have thought having a larger car would be more cost effective having a diesel engine over a petrol. That being said I'm happy to hear recommendations for alternatives.

I have had a Superb 2.0TDi Estate (to me the saloon looks carp) for the last 6 years, now 9 years old.  Had it all through Covid.  It had ~60k miles on it when I bought, now has around 105k miles never had a problem with the DPF, I don't do many miles now but I get in a couple of decent runs a month.  MPG is around 50-55mpg in summer and 45-50mpg in the winter (short trips as usual also know those figures back a little).  Engine has been faultless, although I do have a very small oil leak that my MOT mentions but it is less than half a pint a year and is an engine out job to fix so I will continue to monitor it.  Only real work has been a cambelt and tyres, will need new front discs and pads sometime before the next MOT probably.

I think it's a great with plenty of grunt.  Biggest car in it's class and a lot of boot space which can be a godsend on occasions.  Why go for an Octavia when you can a lot of comfort.  If you can get one with adaptive cruise control, best thing since sliced bread in my view.

If I was in the market and felt flush the only other car I would look at is an VW Arteon otherwise I would get the same again.

Not sure you will get one within budget and most are high mileage (I assume mostly motorway?)

I had 3 Skoda Octavias, the last one being a 1.4 Tsi (petrol), great car with good economy, around 45 / 50 mpg actual. I prefered it to my previous Octavia which was a 2.0 ltr diesel, and in real world driving not a lot of difference in performance. I would go petrol.....

    Cost effective you say..

When you say long trip, how far is that?

    Skoda Enyaq.
Any EV, so long as you can charge at home.

    Thanks,

I've always liked the Skoda estates, Superb is my favourite, but I do really like the sporty look of the Octavia VRS. I was hoping to have a larger budget, but due to the sparilainag cost of keeping my C4 on the road is forcing my hand. So unfortunately most cars in my budget are higher mileage, another reason I'm leaning toward diesels, especially as the Skoda diesel engines appear to be fairly reliable.

I have had a Mondeo in the past and really liked it, hence with that's on the list also, especially the lastest revision.

Many people don't want EVs!  They are only cheaper to run because of all the de facto subsidies they are still attracting.

Nothing much wrong with any of those on your shortlist.

At 6k, keep your options open and just look for a well cared for example of one of them

It' ll be over 10 years old and have a lot of mileage

He's got £6k. What a pointless suggestion. Have a look at what there is for £6k electric on Auto Trader and get back to us with the most practical estate car you find.

No hope of charging at home, also what EV is £6k. I do like the idea of an EV, or hybrid but it really isn't an option on my budget or ability to charge.
