A nice Octavia estate has been recently listed on Copart. Has slight damage to the front end. Might go for a lot considering it is the Scout model. Whether you would entertain buying a write-off only you can answer that. I'd certainly consider buying my next car as a Cat N.
I hope you're joking. There's no such thing as a "nice" car at Copart, they are all the ones which can't, or don't, make it to a regular auction. Even if it was "nice" the day it arrives (which is when they take the pictures), by the time its been stored at Copart and shifted around by forklift loader etc, they're often damaged or destroyed in weird ways.

I'd avoid Copart unless you know what you're doing.
Of course they don't make it to regular auctions the vast majority are salvage.  Whether written off or stolen recovered.  I do agree that you need to know a man that can sort them out.

I have had 6 or 7 over the years that my pay body shop pal repaired for me. I did however always add a ~50% contingency to his quote and never touched anything where the air bags had been deployed.

    Cost effective you say..

When you say long trip, how far is that?

    Skoda Enyaq.
Any EV, so long as you can charge at home.

He's got £6k. What a pointless suggestion. Have a look at what there is for £6k electric on Auto Trader and get back to us with the most practical estate car you find.
To be fair, if the budget was slightly higher at £8k there are a wide range of MG5's available.  Massively underrated car and you can pick up a 22 plate Long Range with 65k miles for that money.

What do you mean to be fair ?? The OP said £6k at most. What's not to be understood about that ?
Had the OP a means to charge at home - then a ten year newer car with warranty remaining costing £1.5-£2k more but saving > £1k a year to fuel up and £££s on servicing isn’t a completely stupid proposition.

We’ve established it’s not suitable for the OP but for other readers with a driveway it might be different.

I should have also said that I have a great panel beater and spray painter. When you add these together and have margins you are willing to go to I don't see any harm in it. What might be good for me, might not be for you and I appreciate you making this point.

Well after missing out on one or two preferred cars, and a couple just feeling wrong for one reason on another, I’ve now seen a 2018 Octavia. It’s 1.6 tdi estate, would this engine be a little underpowered for the size of the car? Has anyone had one to give me some info on it?

also this is a little irk the car only has 5 months MOT left. Would I be pushing for fresh MOT when spending £6k on it?

Many people don't want EVs!  They are only cheaper to run because of all the de facto subsidies they are still attracting.
What subsidies make them cheaper to run?
    • Government backed grant discounts
    • Tax reliefs to buy EVs through company
    • No fuel duty equivalent to pay
    • Lower VAT rate on electricity
    • Cheaper EV electricity prices, that the rest of us are subsidising
In your blind hatred of EVs you are missing the point.  Yes there are cheaper electric prices for EV, but only at certain times and the rates outside these times are higher than standard, so no, you are not subsidising it, the customer is paying a higher tariff rate outside of the 4-5 hours they get a cheaper rate for.  I haven't changed to an EV rate as the wife doesn't want the washer and dryer running at night when we are sleeping due a perceived risk of fire

Intelligent Octopus, gives you charging outside the off peak period as well. Only load shifting I do is charging the EV during the day, when I know we have heavy house usage, to get off peak rate in daytime.

So when you compare IOG quoted rates (for me)
    7p off peak
    27p Peak.

Yet my Average kWh over a month is between 12 & 15p. So I'm £££ in on EV tariff.
Can you get a variable tariff that cheap?

Good car/engine. I would want a fresh mot on it though.

Yes, I didn't realise it at the time because it's never really mentioned anywhere, but it was worth buying an EV just for the electricity tariff alone.  We save enough on our electricity bill alone to more than pay for the cost of the car / servicing / insurance / etc.

Two years on there is a much bigger second hand market too - when we were looking you really needed to pay £12-15k for a modern EV (even though some dealers wanted £20k+) - now anyone with a budget of £8-10k and a driveway has a wide range of options.

In my area their rates are 30p kwh outside of the promotional rate and can't get Intellgent for the Peugeot e5008 or for the charger I have had installed
