Rac charging me for cancelling breakdown
Does this seem right , it doesn't to me
Approx 11 months ago I took out Rac breakdown cover paying DD , I took out insurance with another company as was cheaper , this year the Rac have quoted me a cheaper price for my car insurance so I have gone with them , however it also covers breakdown , therefore I have contacted them and said that I wish to cancel their breakdown cover as I have got cover with them as part of my insurance , they want to charge me £45 ! , any advice on this please .

Presumably your standalone policy only has one payment left to be made and its under £45?neilc75 said:Does this seem right , it doesn't to me

Assuming thats correct then there is no harm in just letting the breakdown cover run and just make sure you stop the auto renewal.
Its common for contracts to have an early exit fee and its simpler for everyone if its a flat fee rather than personally worked out for you. For Motor, rather than breakdown, there are risks with letting a policy run rather than cancelling it but not for breakdown.1 -
Paying monthly is just taking a loan to pay them the full amount. So you still owe the balance.neilc75 said:Does this seem right , it doesn't to me

Thank you for your responses
I appreciate i might still owe the balance if cancelling , however I'm taking out their car insurance and adding on breakdown with it so they are actually getting more out of me . If I had house insurance with a company and bought an expensive item and wanted to increase the cover they wouldn't charge me for cancelling the original cover and start a new cover, they would amend it , technically for 2 months I am going to covered for a breakdown with them twice , I'm sure if I had a breakdown they wouldn't send 2 vans out , how can they justify charging me 2x cover for the same vehicle for 2 months ?0 -
..because most things in life are now a complete rip off....most service providers I have dealt with recently are happy to increase your payments by more than inflation, while at the same time offering you a worse service."Our lines our extremely busy right now.....but we really care about your call"....do they "******".....just to tight to employ more staff..........just the modern way of doing business unfortunately..."It's everybody's fault but mine...."0

Their doing what you asked them to do and charging you accordingly.neilc75 said:Thank you for your responses

If you don't want to be charged twice for a period of time, then don't add on the breakdown and just renew it at the end of month 12 as another stand alone policy.
The house insurance comparison/comment is irrelevant (its not breakdown insurance, you need to compare your RAC situation with another breakdown policy/company).
If it makes you happy, you could remove the rotor arm from under the distributor cap and call them out for a breakdown (and then keep doing it to waste everyone's time). Or dismantle the accelerator linkage is another thing you could do.

Doesn't that assume the OP has a rather elderly car?singhini said:

RAC do not provide insurance. They are just a broker.neilc75 said:Thank you for your responses

And RAC insurance brokers are a different company to the breakdown element.
That said when I worked there, which was a very long time ago, we used to suspend the existing memberships when a customer ended up with two when buying a new car which came with a free membership.
Ok not quite the same scenario but might be worth an ask.0 -
You’re paying an admin fee for the work involved in cancelling .
Somebody has to do the cancellation work a get paid wages for doing so.0
