My boyfriend owns the house. Should I be paying rent?
Hi My boyfriend and I have been together almost 10 years. For 6 of those years we have been cohabiting. When I moved in, he requested that I pay a sum towards living at the house. This has never been a problem and I so I paid the requested amount. Looking back I wish I was more outspoken in my thinking and should have…

Power of attorney and pre-paid credit cards
Hi, I'm hoping someone has experience of this. I recently and sadly had to activate my power of attorney for my dad's banking as there was an attempted fraud to his account and sue to a fall earlier in the year he's on a lot of painkiller medication and is unable to manage his finances safely. I've been advised by his…

Match.com - does suspending an account still take monthly payments?
Hi, Im thinking about joining match.com. Its cheaper to sign up to their 6 month plan for £10pm. If I find someone after a couple of month, can I pause my account and not pay more. Then reactivate it in the future if needs be and continue paying for it? Ive looked on their website and its not clear. Thanks

Should I get married?
Can anyone tell me the plus and minus of getting married? We live in Scotland, been happily together for 18 years and live in separate houses, which we would continue to do. Both now in our early 70s. Apparently his IFA has said it would make tax sense if we tied the knot. Be interested to hear your comments :)

I survived (mini update)
Hi all. A few of you might remember my posts here from quite a few years ago. I went through a load of difficult situations and had a really bad time of it. I've been in a meditative mood today, reflecting on the past which prompted me to look at the old threads I posted before. This isn't to brag or anything, just to…

Splitting the bill
When you get older, and you have friends round, when is it acceptable to split the bill? If i invite guests over for dinner, I wouldn't ask them to pay even if I cooked. But how about a takeaway? Or going out to eat? What is the accepted etiquette? Does it change with lifestage?

Splitting finances fairly
We have been in a relationship for 16 years, not married, one child 13. Relationship is pretty crappy. He has property and shares - value close to £1 Million if all cashed in. He lives off the rent of London Property. We lived there mortgage free until 2021 and he paid bills and I paid for food & other expenses. He now…

Paying money to my partner
I’ve been with my partner for four years now and moved into
his house two years ago, he is 44 and I am 38. I pay half of all the household
bills and food, apart from that I pay all of the energy bills because I work
from home (which was my suggestion as I thought that was fair) and he has to
pay for his fuel to go to go…

How to change name after marriage?
Can someone help me? I’m trying to change my name after recently getting married, I want to change my last name (Miss Sarah Smith) to my husband’s last name (Mrs Sarah Jones) starting with HM land registry via the generic AP1 form. This is the first step I’ve taken in changing my name, I haven’t done anything else yet…

Husband has left me
I have been with my husband 13 years. We have two kids. We got married 18 months ago and bought a new house almost a year ago. This weekend he left, he’s cheating on me and no going back. The problem is the house, we have a big mortgage and a house that needs loads of work which we were doing slowly. We are also locked…

Money Moral Dilemma: Can I keep some of the cash from selling my daughter's christening present?
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks... My daughter was given an antique toy as a christening present 18 years ago, which she stopped playing with long ago and says she no longer wants. I mentioned this to an acquaintance with an interest in antiques, and they put me in touch with a buyer who, after some haggling…

What does marriage mean these days?
So myself and my partner have been together almost 11 years, we have a house, two children together (and my two sons live with us) and are very happy. My question is, although both of us have wills stating what we’d like to happen in the event of our passing… Is there any benefit to being married? Neither of us are…

Care home fees, but what about the spouse at home
My husband has serious cognitive impairment and is having occasional respite care in a private care home (no others in our area). The time will come before too long when he will need to go into care permanently. He is self funding and we have each got some savings. What concerns me is that if a financial assessment is…

Can I stop/object to a person becoming Deputy for Property and Affairs?
Becoming Deputy for Property and Affairs for my Mother (96, alzheimer’s,
no LPA) The person applying is my brother, who I deem an inappropriate
person. I was informed by a Social Worker that the County Council were
aware that my brother was applying for Deputy for Property and Affairs on
behalf of his Mother. I have very…

Return to this thread December 2023 - New Years Resolutions
Following on from our December 2021 resolutions thread this is your chance to set your intentions for 2023. This is probably a good time for a lot of us to set at least one money saving intention, it is set to be a tough year for a lot of people sadly. As always I’m taking some time to think and will come back and post…

Ex refuses to settle on property holding me hostage
Under the premise that this was going to be a future marital home, I purchased a flat with an ex. He has NEVER lived there, never contributed to a single bill, upkeep or anything. He only contributed to the deposit. After the property was purchased his behaviour changed and coercive control began. He also said he didn't…

What’s your earliest financial memory?
Yesterday Martin Lewis asked: "What’s your earliest financial memory? Perhaps it was a coin from the tooth fairy under the pillow? Lunch money to school in a backback? Finding a penny (or spending one)." I'd like to hear the Forum's long-ago stories. Let's have 'em, please. 💷

LPA Concerns
Sorry in advance, this is a long one. About two years ago my elderly parents took out an LPA for health and welfare, which has my brother and I named joint and severally as their attorneys. Whilst I did the application online, they both received independent advice from their solicitor, who also witnessed their signatures.…
