Which plants, for a large planter?
You will have seen the type of planter, large square plastic one that they have in shopping areas. Presently they contain mostly ever greens. The wrong thing, I believe. They are very low maintenance, but I want more colour. A few geraniums in the middle, surrounded by pansies perhaps?

Fence Vs hedge
There seems to be a trend towards concrete n wood fences. As this is a money saving site, which is cheapest, in the long run? Despite hedges needed cutting, surely they must be more environmentally friendly. My front wooden fence was fitted by the council nine years ago, still ok, but I don't expect it to last more than a…

Garden Pond Liner Quest.
So, I'm looking for a good quality pond liner. Having done some research, it seems the best type is currently RPE (Reinforced Polyethylene). However, I can't find a supplier of that type in the UK. All my searches bring up USA suppliers. Has anyone come across this for sale in the UK? The next best quality seems to be…

Changing my lawn to a shingle/pebble area?
My smallish back garden faces due south so in summer fades badly as I don't water the lawn. The area is about 12 yards by 8 yards, so not big. The lawn when it has enough water frames the surrounding small borders nicely but for the last few summers not looking too good as the summers progress. I'm now in my late 70's,…

Swallows making a huge mess
Swallows decided to nest in my back porch this year. I can’t think why because it seems like a dreadful location for raising a family. Both me and the cat are in and out of the back door regularly throughout the day, which makes the swallows start dive-bombing us. The nest isn’t very high up either. I use the porch for…

Roses - help with blackspot
We have had six different coloured miniature rose bushes in our garden for about 20 years. For the past four or five years we have been plagued with blackspot. We went on holiday for three weeks a couple of years ago and returned to twigs rather than bushes! I have tried to do what I think is right by removing any infected…

Garden Vac/Blower
I am considering buying one of these but would appreciate some advice/real life experience first please. My particular situation is that we have a hedge that runs alongside a garden area which consists of decorative aggregate (not gravel, but stones about 20-25mm in size). When I use the hedge cutter to trim the hedge a…

Loganberries
Hi all Ive bought 2 loganberry plants which I was intending to put into large pots. However most of the online advice says loganberries need to go into the ground rather than pots. Has anyone grown loganberries on here? I have blueberries, raspberries, blackcurrants and a jostaberry in pots, they are doing well. I also…

Growing roses from seeds
Hi everyone, ‘tis me again i have seen on eBay rose seeds for sale. The cynical side of me is wondering how genuine this is. Some of the colours are very unusual for roses such as emerald green or all the colours of the rainbow on one rose. I am assuming “rose seeds” are what you get inside the hips. I am wondering if…

Plant ID
Any idea what this plant might be? It's cropped up in a few locations, but seems to do very well in the shade. Appeared last year and died back, has come back even bigger. No flowers last year or yet this year. I really like it and fancy some more.

I used to put receipts in my composters
Am I worrying too much and is it only minimal risk? Before I realised many shop receipts contain BPA, I used to shred my shop receipts and put them in my composters. I have then used tbis compost in my garden, where I grow fruit and veg. Have I any health concerns to worry about because of this?

Preparing clay soil for grass
Hello, Please would people be able to advise how best to prepare this (i think clay) soil for either grass seed or turf? Obviously once all the remaining slate/pebbles and lining has been removed. I'm aware I'll need a fair bit of topsoil on top to bring it to the level of the flagstones, but will I need to do anything to…

Bear’s breeches and ground cover
My acanthus loves my sunny dry border. I was thinking of splitting it and seeing if it would also thrive in the NNW shady damper border opposite but now discover that it has self seeded. Does it come true from seed? One of the self seeded plants is in a sort of fox highway, where the soil is so compacted that it would be…
