Is it good to leave grass cutting on lawn?
My council now charges for green waste so i thought I'd compost my grass cutting instead of paying however, it seems i will have to much grass to compost over a period of time. Although my mower collects the grass i have heard from some people that leaving the grass on the lawn acts like a slow fertilizer putting the…

Having a wall removed & hedge installed
Hi there! Q: Out front, our neighbours have a nice hedge with lots of birds in it & gives a generally lovely aspect. We have a crappy brick halfwall. I want to know the feasibility/cost of having the wall removed & having a full hedge installed. Can you buy a full-grown hedge? Or will we have to grow our own from…

Garden has become a cat litter
Hi all, We've been living in our house for 4 and a half years. We have a pretty small 50 sq.ft. rear garden, which we've left to itself pretty much... I cut the grass every couple weeks from May to September, but that's pretty much the extent of the maintenance. Our two cats started ignoring the indoor cat litter about two…

Broadcasting Seeds
The usual advice is to broadcast seeds with sand. I don't have any and I won't buy a bag just for that. So what else can I use to add to the seeds? Would a small handful of Growmore suffice?

How to best preserve the wooden planters for ornamental plants
Hi everyone, I have been improving our garden since moving in our first home 2 years ago. With the space also started growing some fruits and vegetables. For these I got some good quality, almost new clean palettes (heat treated and used to supply research lab equipment). Ok with them to rot but dont want to use any wood…

Planter at entrance to village
Morning all. I recently moved to a small village and as a contribution to village life have adopted a planter. It's about 3 ft high and 4 ft across maybe a tad more. Stone. At the moment it's a bit weedy but I can see some bits coming through but not sure what yet. Cold part of the country and it's very exposed to all…

Can photinia be made into a tree?
Hi. Saw a Phot Red Robin in a garden down t'road which was tree-shaped - a long trunk with a canopy on top. On closer look, it appeared the 'trunk' was two of three stems which were strapped together to look and act as one. I'm looking for a small evergreen tree with a bit of interest, and the leaf colour would likely fit…

I do have some small sachets of Miracle Gro, and liquid stuff for tomatoes but am completely out of general feed to scatter onto shrubs, rhubarb, and the ground in general. Really don't want to buy more products than necessary but need guidance re. Bone meal v. Grow more v Fish blood bone. What do you use? What's the…

Cherry Tree fiasco?
I get ruined fruit every year on my cherry tree and despite the bird netting i am thinking some it must be an insect, i saw a lot of shield bugs last year in the back yard so i am blaming them. I have ordered a large fine net to stop bugs but some videos claim to put the net over when cherries start going red but others…

Lavender plants for a grave
Hi, apologies for perhaps a very basic question. My gardening knowledge is very limited. I am after a lavender plant with, in order or preference: * Involves minimal care (as to be planted on a grave) - it may not be possible to water it weekly for example* lasts most seasons (or as many as possible)* Has a strong scent Is…

Rodents in the garden.
I could have sworn I posted a question about my finding little holes dug in the garden last year - about 4 inches in diameter and about 6 inches deep, many going diagonally down to plant roots - sometimes in plants I'd put in only a few days before. Anyway, yesterday I discovered one or two little friends. They are bigger…

Old garden chemical identification - help!
I have a very old bottle of pesticide and the label has more or less come off so I cannot identify exactly what it was. I am trying to dispose of it safely via the hazardous waste collection operated by the City of London but I am not sure if they will take it without knowing what it is. I am sending them an email too but…
