Landrace gardening
I might be very late to the party here. I already practice no dig gardening, I don't use pesticides, I do make compost and thanks to the hotbin, have leachate to use for feed, I grow bocking comfrey for feeding, I let weeds mostly have their say apart from ragwort. My front garden style is a mix of edibles and a lot of…

They want to take my allotment away from me.
I've had my allotment since 2012. I practice a sort of semi-no-dig permaculture approach. I harvest potatoes, blackcurrants, rhubarb, broad beans, artichokes, asparagus, runner beans, squashes and courgettes, salads, broccoli and kale, radishes, chard and all the other little things. Occasionally things get a but weedy but…

Rainbow Roses
Looking through Ebay yesterday I came across Rainbow Rose seeds. Although I know it is possible to grow roses from seed you cannot grow these rainbow roses. I thought it was photoshopped, but having done some research, apparently not. They are made by cutting the stems into four sections and putting each cut section into…

Self mulching mower
How do these mowers work. My mower is meant to be self mulching, but it gets very noisy when I blank off the hole and it seems like the cut grass has no where to go. I do sometimes prefer not to collect the grass, so I take the bag off and leave the back open, by propping it open with a stick.

Tiny supermarket acers?

Is it good to leave grass cutting on lawn?
My council now charges for green waste so i thought I'd compost my grass cutting instead of paying however, it seems i will have to much grass to compost over a period of time. Although my mower collects the grass i have heard from some people that leaving the grass on the lawn acts like a slow fertilizer putting the…

Having a wall removed & hedge installed
Hi there! Q: Out front, our neighbours have a nice hedge with lots of birds in it & gives a generally lovely aspect. We have a crappy brick halfwall. I want to know the feasibility/cost of having the wall removed & having a full hedge installed. Can you buy a full-grown hedge? Or will we have to grow our own from…

Garden has become a cat litter
Hi all, We've been living in our house for 4 and a half years. We have a pretty small 50 sq.ft. rear garden, which we've left to itself pretty much... I cut the grass every couple weeks from May to September, but that's pretty much the extent of the maintenance. Our two cats started ignoring the indoor cat litter about two…

Broadcasting Seeds
The usual advice is to broadcast seeds with sand. I don't have any and I won't buy a bag just for that. So what else can I use to add to the seeds? Would a small handful of Growmore suffice?

How to best preserve the wooden planters for ornamental plants
Hi everyone, I have been improving our garden since moving in our first home 2 years ago. With the space also started growing some fruits and vegetables. For these I got some good quality, almost new clean palettes (heat treated and used to supply research lab equipment). Ok with them to rot but dont want to use any wood…

Planter at entrance to village
Morning all. I recently moved to a small village and as a contribution to village life have adopted a planter. It's about 3 ft high and 4 ft across maybe a tad more. Stone. At the moment it's a bit weedy but I can see some bits coming through but not sure what yet. Cold part of the country and it's very exposed to all…

Hi, has anyone been able to get their local council to stop the increases to the annual rent. GCC have increased theirs by 400%. Absolutely shocking increase which will impact the poorest people hard.
