Help with identification - ash or rowan
Hi, found this growing in a pot with my Xmas rose. It's as tall as me. No idea how it got here but maybe the birds brought it. Love the ferny looking leaves. Wondering whether to keep it and move it in the autumn once I get the conifer removed. It's in the ground now but in the wrong location. I quite fancy a rowan but an…

Can I cut back a Clematis Montana?
I have a very old ( over 30 years ) spring flowering Clematis. It is now really ragged and tangled but I have always been told not to prune it too hard. It's now at the point where I have been thinking of getting rid of it and planting a new one but if I cut it right back to near the base do you think I could save it? If…

Using a boom sprayer for kurtail?
I'm going to buy some kurtail to try and tackle my horsetail situation on my driveway. Application says by boom sprayer - but all these ones I've looked at are pretty expensive. Is a normal pressure sprayer for weeds etc ok? Or can anyone recommend a reasonably priced boom sprayer that would be ok?

What is the name of this tree please? Can it damage my house?
I bought my house about 3 years ago and it came with a relatively big tree in the garden. The house was built in 2014 so I assume the tree was planted by the original owners about 9 years ago. In the 3 years that I have owned the house I don't think it has grown further (I hope). I have estimated it's about 6 meters tall,…

Strimmer wire
How do I know which way my strimmer wire goes? It's an older Black n Decker, petrol strimmer that I have recently acquired. It's a double wire, so will both wires wrap in the same direction? Edit, I wound it round clockwise on one way, but it didn't come out when a clicked the ground. Maybe one wire is sufficient?

Selling a tree?
Hello. We have a very nice Acer in our back garden, which goes red every autumn. Sadly it needs to come out as we are very limited in space and need room for the kids to play. It seems a shame just to cut it down, and it would cost £1000+ to buy a similar example from a tree stockist. It's about 15 feet high, give or take.…

Front Garden Ideas
Hi everyone, We bought this house a year ago and we're finally getting round to tackling the outside. At previous rented properties with gardens in disrepair I've very much enjoyed growing a lawn from scratch. However, we're not too sure what direction to go in with our front garden. As you can see it's previously just had…

What happens to newts if i move home.
My other half has become mentally ill and paranoid about new neighbours who have moved in and she begged me to move house and sell up. I want to do this for the sake of her mental state but I do worry about my garden and pond full of newts, a new owner could fill it in and cut down my trees. It is a bad situation and a…

Plastic greenhouse - when to open door?
Hi there. A keen but very much an amateur gardener, here. I have bought myself a 5-tier plastic greenhouse and have been using it to grow chilli and tomato plants for the last month or so. Up to now, I have always left the door closed, with a tray of water at the bottom, for humidity purposes. The only time I ever open the…

Garden hose spray lance
For years we have been using a spray lance with our hose with no issues, until last year when a storm broke it beyond repair. So we bought a replacement. The hose is Hozelock and the lance was also Hozelock. However we saw the reviews were not good saying it wasnt as good as previously. We gambled and went ahead and bought…

Time to Find Out Where your Local Plant Swap Events are!
Here in Nottingham, we've had about 4 swaps so far by different groups and the next on is a biggie by the Nott'm Organic Gardeners' Group. It's always a scram to this one as there's loads of plants of all kinds (mainly veg and flowers) and it brings a lot of interest. If you want to save money on going to exhorbitant…

How to save dying trees
Hello, I have these trees in my garden which are dying/dead. I didn’t plant them and know next to nothing about gardening. Last summer, I watered them relentlessly and quite a lot of green has started reappearing. How do I bring them back to life again? Should I pull all the dead brown parts off? Thanks

Ivy - best way to control it?
The garden is full of ivy which is now spreading faster than ever - up the trees, on the wall of the building, over the fences and in the flower beds. What is the best way to control it? Do I really have to dig the stuff up? Is it just a war of attrition? I already have one of those with the pesky alkanet.
