Good evening.

Does anyone know why this gravel would be called Gravel Down?

Does the Down, mean something special?

At a guess, a typo - Should probably read "Gravel, Brown".

    Thank you FreeBear.

I telephoned that company and they are not too sure what it is.

But I also just found it on this website.

    https://www.mcnairs.co.uk/item/4012/BuildingMaterials/Down-Washed-Gravel-10mm-25kg.html

They said that Down-Washed is a rinsing process that they do at the quarry to rinse out impurities.

Interestingly, these are the only two websites where I have found it on-line and they are both in Scotland.

(I was wondering about this, because apparently I may have some of it in my garden: newly laid.)

But the first site said it was unwashed...?

I thought they were quoting the average builder..."you want some gravel down, mate?"  or "no problem, we'll get some gravel down"!  :)

...Blimey, I've just noticed that the first company say they are "Authorised  and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority"!  That's got to be a first for a builders' merchants!

The term down refers to the sizing. 20mm Down means the product is 20mm down to dust.
