I use geraniums in my tubs all summer and the slugs seem to leave them alone, i am tempted by a bit of winter colour with something like violas but i worry about slugs and snails, anyone experienced this?

I have pansies and violas in pots. They do  get slightly munched but not enough to not make it worthwhile putting them in Primula/primrose are slug resistant and give a good bit of colour, and I also put wall flowers for the early spring colour and scent, and gaultheria  for Christmas red berries. Cyclamen are slug proof.
And don’t forget your bulbs, – snowdrops, crocus, et cetera

I just like a mixture of stuff in my pots to keep it interesting.

I use sheeps wool for tender plants.
Pick up from around the fields and wind it round the plants. You can get the pellets, cost a bit but they do work all winter.
I do a pot of bulbs for Spring when it's still too cold for geraniums. Iris Reticulata, Crocus and such.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Heathers, pink and white, cyclamen and a bit of evergreen.
