Money Moral Dilemma: Should I let visitors with electric vehicles (EVs) charge them for free?
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks… I have a home EV charge point and up till now I've let friends and family with electric cars charge them for free when they visit. But I've started to wonder if I should ask them to pay for the electricity - after all, you wouldn't expect someone you are visiting to fill your…

Thinking "outside the box" British energy prices Vs comparable markets
Whilst most of us are "in the game" of tariff and "savings" with ever so many suppliers etc, I just can not come to terms it being at least double the price of IE Spain prices, never mind paying "standing charges" and don't get me started on "exit-fee" scams. https://www.energyprices.eu/electricity/spain Am I wrong or is…

Economy 7 / 7am cheap rate
It's probably been asked a million times already but does anyone know which electricity supplier I should use if I want the old economy 7 tariff? Usually that was 12am to 7am at the lower rate. A lot of companies now have reduced their overnight window and that's not as good for me. Some end at 5:30am, a lot of them end at…

BG won’t accept my meter reading
When I submitted my meter reading for my electricity it just then shows a much lower estimated amount! It did show my gas reading correctly however. I have tried submitting by both app and web site with no change. Just their estimated amount. The same applies to trying their phone option as well. Any ideas? I am not on a…

Fixing Tariff Octopus
Hello Folks, My fixed term with Octopus is up in August. Just looking at MSE's advice and it sounds like going for a fixed tariff is best option to avoid the increases that coming soon. Anyway looking at the fixed tariffs for gas and electricity Octopus is offering it looks like they have already baked the 13% or increase…

Fuse Energy still demanding high upfront payment
£500 upfront I deemed excessive when my annual bill is less than £750/an What shocked me more was at no time during the sign up was I told they would do an indepth credit search; Fuse implied it was that that flagged a poor credit history: I've paid my bills on time, have no bad debts, no flags. My feeling is this is a…

Smart Meters and IHD not working Mystery
I got a new smart gas and new smart electricity meter fitted on 18th May and the IHD has never worked. I informed BG and was told they would look into it. After 3 weeks I am told they are still looking into it and it could take 35 days to work. My neighbour got new smart meters fitted this morning and their IHD is working…

Energy standing Charges - OFGEM's inability to address unfair standing charges on consumers
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding OFGEM's inability to address unfair standing charges on consumers energy bills. The disproportionate standing charges applied to my and energy bill is a typical example. As a low energy user, I take every measure to reduce my energy consumption, not out of choice but out of…

Smart Meter monitor working question
I aplogise for the long story. On the BG MSE fix, and finallly got round to installing a smart meter. From phone call to installation 1 day. BG got their box ticked and target met. Installed on Feb 11, told by the guy the home monitor would work in 2 hrs to 2 days. After a week phoned and told it would work in 28 days.…

MSE News: Prepay for your energy? You could keep today's cheaper rates for a little longer
Many with older prepayment meters could potentially delay the upcoming price hikes and keep the cheaper rates under the current price cap for a little longer. It's all about 'stockpiling' gas and electricity credit before the rates rise. Read the full story here: 'Prepay for your energy? You could keep today's cheaper…

Inspection panel for flue
We've just had British Gas out for our annual boiler service. The boiler was fine as expected, as it has been working abolsutely fine but we have their homecare agreement and so do the service once a year. However, they have advised that our existing inspection panel is too small and an additional inspection panel is…

EDF General incompetence & lack of care etc...
I am on the Protected Services Register and I pay EDF for my gas and electricity via Fuel Direct deductions from my Pension Credit. These were agreed in mid-2020 at the weekly rate of £27 for Electricity and £23 for gas, with a fixed payment of £3.70 for each account’s arrears, the total deduction being £57.40. I have…

Attempted Energy Swap
2 to 3 months ago I completed the process of applying to swap my Electric & Gas tariff via the MSE Cheap Energy Club. Time passed I heard nothing, but as I was only changing tariff but staying with British Gas, I thought it must have sailed through. Unfortunately I heard on 31st May from MSE Cheap Energy Club that, British…

Switching to new energy deal before previous one finishes
Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to book an energy deal in advance, so the contract under that tariff starts only after my current energy deal finishes. That is even if the new companies tariff increases in the interim period.

Octopus forced us to have smart meter fitted and checking 2 years of electric bills
Beginning of May we were told our electric bills had an error and octopus are going over 2 years of electric bills. We always send monthly readings for both gas and electric and pay by DD monthly. we were in credit before this issue. They then said our meter is at the end of its lifespan so we must get it changed. We were…
