I've just been appointed Deputy in charge of my mother's finance and affairs. This was required because although she's able to look after herself, she's suffered from schizophrenia for a number of years. As a result of her concerns that mysterious (non-existent) people were stealing her money, she would withdraw large…

How can I help my mother prepare for retirement
My mother is 66 and will be retiring at the end of March from a full time job. She lives alone in her own house and has no mortgage on it. She will not, however, have much of an income. I don't know exactly what it will be but I know she is quite worried about it. My first recommendation for her is to do her budget. So far…

Do care homes get more money the more drugs the residents take?
I now have the care records for my mother, in the first home to which she was admitted in 2005, direct from hospital. The medication administration record shows that she was on a great many drugs from the outset but there is no sign of these actually having been prescribed for her .... Which made me wonder for the first…

stick-in-the-mud attitudes
Have just given a relative some well meant advice re finances only to be subject to a tirade of verbal abuse. All I was suggesting was getting 4% on the Lloyds TSB Vantage account, moving savings into a higher rate account and going "dual-fuel" - all good MSE advice. Why are some people so stubborn and set in their ways?

Residential care homes
Hi everyone, It's my first day of posting here (on this board). I couldn't find an exact appropriate board to post this on, but thought this might be the better one to do so. My wife and I are in the VERY EARLY stages of exploring the possibility of eventually starting up a residential care home. The reasons for this are…

Tax implications of gifting
My friend's mum is thinking of gifting a few thousand pounds to her son. Her estate does not come to more than the inheritance tax limit but she is worried about the tax implications on her son. Could anyone tell me if her son would have to pay tax on the gift? I believe he is a taxpayer.
