will they tell you if probate has been applied for or granted over the phone and if money was in three seperate bank accounts and there was less than 10,000 (some maybe even less than 5,000) in each would probate even need to be applied for, there is no property involved

I doubt if the Probate Office would tell you anything over the phone other than how to arrange and pay for for their standing search' service to alert you if probate is applied for. I think it's only a fiver though

Depends on the banks as to their limit to pay without probate. £10K I would doubt -£5K maybe.

Anything over 5,000 pounds has to go through probate. The probate office will give you information. It is very easy to apply for.
