Do holiday companys still do long (4/6 weeks) holidays in Spain

I was chatting to my wife earlier and we thought of how our parents went on extended holidays to various resorts in Spain when they were younger (and alive). Do the holiday companys still offer these as they used to be as cheap as chips?

I have not been abroad for 15 years and thought it could be an option as I need to find somewhere to live for 5/6 weeks between house moves. My mindset is still into picking up a brochure and booking a holiday.
My daughter told me, after I posted, that the new way is to go online and book flight, hotel and transfers separately and in which case I can go where I like for as long as I like. Sounds a bit scary to me:eek:0 -
I would suggest that you will find it difficult to get a flight and hotel cheaper than a package deal .......... unless you have some local knowledge? You might want to try http://www.laterooms.com
It is no longer cheap as chips in spain. You might find it is a lot more expensive than you imagine, but still much cheaper than 5/6 weeks in a comparible UK hotel."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Doing it that way, you're much more likely to be able to tailor your holiday the way you want. I've never been on a package holiday but I believe you 'take what you're given' having chosen the package and paid your money down.
The way your daughter suggests is the way DH and I always plan our holidays, although we never go away for as long as you envisage. However, there are always deals to be done. You can often get the same price per night if you say you want to stay a little longer - 5 nights rather than 4, for example. Or mid-week rather than over a weekend.
We are planning a holiday in the west of Ireland this summer and have already identified the guest-house where we want to stay. We've booked with mine hostess there, spoken to her by phone - very friendly helpful lady - and she took a credit card number, but that booking is not fixed in stone as it would be if we'd booked and paid for a package holiday. I am possibly looking at more surgery in the near future, so if we can't go, we can't go.
Doing it the way your daughter suggests certainly gives you more possibilities and more freedom. You would also be spared the heartache of those people who paid for a holiday and then found that the holiday company went out of business the day before they were due to leave.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Thank you all for your very useful help.
I guess the days of getting the Thomson brochure, and picking an all inclusive holiday, have long since gone. I am very into HiTech and my PC but because we haven't gone abroad for so long I am starting to realise it is diffrent now!!! Names I used to know are no longer there and lots of new names I have never heard of so I need to get mugging up on things.
Or I could buy a caravan and live in that for a while? Or perhaps not as a bit of a squash. And I have never towed a caravan before.. eeek!0 -
