Todays free book on Snazal.com is wills, probate and inheritance tax for dummies (just pay the p&p) not sure if this will help your problem but could be worth having for someone who is considering making a will.

I assume that the both sisters who have died were your great-aunts?

I don't know if Scottish law is different to English Law but I think (and I'm no expert!) under English Law that the 10% due to your great-aunt who died first (lets call her GA1) will then be inherited in equal shares by her children and if any have died then it will pass to the relevant children in equal shares.

However it depends on the wording of the will - it may be that the great-aunt that has recently died (GA2) stated that if your grandfather or GA1 died before her then their share goes back into the pot so to speak and the RAF is a residual beneficiary so will get everything that is left over after all the other bequests have been made.

tbh I think that it would be best to see a copy of the will to see what wording is used as I'm sure that a provision would have been made for one of your GA2's siblings pre-deceasing her.

The other thing, is that whilst I appreciate the inheritance would have made his life more comfortable, it really isn't worth worrying over
