A new job - any ideas?
I just wondered what jobs anyone over 60ish has taken recently. I don't mean a continuation of your lifelong career but something different. I left my career at quite a senior management position after a life in local govt and the NHS a few years ago and since then have had a variety of jobs - currently in a shop, admin…

Ending of age allowance for pensioners in budget
The tax system is to be "simplified" by phasing out the age allowance for over 65s. So when personal allowances go up for those under 65 in April, the age allowance will be frozen and, as there will not be an increase in line with inflation the following year, cut in real terms. It will be frozen until it reaches the same…

how does financing care homes work
Please can you help. We are moving to England and our mum feels she needs to move into a care home. Her house is in trust so I believe cannot be used for care home costs and she has a small amount left in her savings account. She has a substantial pension which may cover her home costs but what if it doesn't. Is it a case…

Granite Memorial Stone
I am not sure where to post this request. I need to purchase a dark grey granite grave stone and kerb memorial for my parents. Funeral directors hand out brochures and place the order with a company that actually make the memorial with a considerable mark up. There is no control over what I will actually receive until it…

Temporary or self-employment and Pension Credit
I am in my mid-sixties and receive State Pension, a tiny occupational pension, Pension Credit Guarantee and associated benefits. I don't want to return to full-time or even part-time permanent PAYE employment - been there, done that for well over 40 years - but I would like to earn again, after having had a couple of years…

My Mum went into respite care a week ago, for a period of weeks to months, I've only just thought about the tv license and that I might not be covered. I live in her house with her, and she gets the free oap's license so I'm normally covered by that, am I still? What about council tax?

Care Home fees and savings - a slightly different query than usual
Hi, I'll keep this as brief and as clear as possible: 1) My FiL has moved to a care home just over a year ago (self funding). 2) His only child is my lovely wife and has financial PoA. She is the sole beneficiary in his will. 3) His house is sold and all assets are now in cash in a savings account. 4) His total assets have…

Health Checks ?
We're a couple in our mid 50's and over the past 6 months have seen TWO friends of the same age die (one 3 months after the diagnosis of cancer) and one literally felt a bit "off" one day, went to bed in the afternoon and died in his sleep. As you can imagine, this has come as a wake-up call for us. One option we're…

Fixed rate pension introduction brought forward
It appears the government has decided to bring forward the introduction of April 2016. To qualify I believe the number of NI years has been raised from 30 to 35. Does anyone know what will be the position for anyone without the necessary NI years? I need to review whether to buy additional NI years.
