Portaloo on public land
Not sure if this the correct place to ask but I wanted to get some advice regarding the following. A neighbour, or neighbouring landlord, is having some work done to their property and they erected a portaloo, not on their land or even in front of, but a few doors down, fully on the pavement. First of all, would they have…

How do rogue traders get past Checkatrade's checks?
Quite easily, I think is the answer https://amp.theguardian.com/money/2024/nov/30/how-do-rogue-traders-get-past-checkatrade-checks Horror stories aside, the phrase that stuck out to me was "Checkatrade denied the allegations and said it had removed 1,000 substandard traders in the past 12 months." I don't care how many…

Wall hung toilet set inc fixings advice required.
We are getting a new bathroom fitted. For one reason or another, we have decided to go for the above toilet/etc. Looking at frames for these toilets I've worked out the best frames could be Ghore and Grohe and Giberit IIRC. Having visited two well-known DIY stores, judging by what the store workers were saying, by all…

What Timer can be used with energy saving light bulbs?
Our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) has just kindly sent us some tips for staying safe in the Winter, now it is dark early. One of them is I – Invest in some timer switchers. Radiators constantly hot despite TRV's being turned off
I've recently moved into a new home. There's 4 radiators upstairs and they all get screaming hot, but the TRV only works on 1 of them. Even when turned down to zero/snowflake, the other 3 rads remain screaming hot. I've taken the TRV heads off and tried to move the pin (it's more of a cone with a flat top rather than long…

Painting Dado rails in Emulsion??
I want to paint my room which has a dado rail and ideally I would like the dado rail and skirting to be the same colour. Both are currently painted in white gloss. Should I get a gloss paint in the same colour for the dado and skirting? (I know I need to sand the current gloss to get a key) Or use the emulsion with primer…

Constant sewage flooding and Thames Water not fixing mains
Any advice here appreciated. There is a broken sewage mains in front of our house. It keeps getting blockages and the only escape is the open drain at the side of our house. We live halfway down a hill and the sewage gushes out, flooding our garden, our neighbours garden downhill from us, and ultimately 2 other properties…

Dry ridge system query
I've had a new roof fitted and was told I'd be supplied with a new dry ridge system. Should this have included new ridges? The roofer has used most of my existing ridges. New ones have been put in where the old ones have cracked when stripping the roof. Should I query this or do most roofers use old ridges?

Which security camera? Neos Smartcams now defunct!
My Neos Smartcams have done a great job over the years. Cannot complain at all. Their continuous recording has been very useful indeed. And other than the £25 outlay for each camera (I have 3) they haven't cost me a penny in subscriptions. But as of this month the app discontinued and the footage can only be used when…

Cooking fumes in my kitchen from the flat below
I've always had extremely strong cooking smells coming up from the flat downstairs (Indian food), but the other day I walked into my kitchen and there were cooking fumes, I mean my kitchen was foggy. I raised it with the directors of the freehold (I am one of them, it's a share of freehold) as a compartmentation issue and…

Advice needed on bathroom accessories (towel rails, mirror cabinets?)
Hi everyone, I’m currently renovating my flat and could use some advice on bathroom fittings. First, does anyone have recommendations for good electric towel rail brands?
