Roofer due diligence
Hello, I've had some quotes for roof repair. Ideally I'd have chosen one of the companies registered with NFRC (national federation of roofing contractors) but I actually prefer the quote from a company that isn't registered with them (let's call them Company X). So, I want a sense check on whether Company X might be…

Do you keep packaging?
Cardboard boxes from large items (flattened), bubble wrap, large polythene bags, thin sheets of foam, jiffy bags, that sort of thing. I'm bad with it. I keep a lot of stuff. packaging can be useful for all sorts of things, but I try to not hoard "too much". but every time I can use it, I'm glad I kept it.

Any tips on painting a ceiling?
Hi folks, Though I have painted before I am definitely no pro, so need to do front room again. I have cleared a good bit of stuff out of it. Obviously will do ceiling first in white. Walls will be a light cream colour, not too dissimilar to the present colour. What's the best way to do the ceiling for eg, do a few inches…

Money Moral Dilemma: Should my neighbour pay half the cost of replacing the saw they often borrow?
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks... I've a small circular saw which I use to cut up pallets into kindling, saving myself a small fortune on buying ready-cut bags. My neighbour often asks to borrow my saw to do the same and uses it as much as I do, if not more. Now the saw needs replacing. With my neighbour…

Air conditioning install
We've had a local installer quote to fit air conditioning in our home (in Sussex), wall mounted in two relatively small rooms with the intention of using his for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. External multi-split unit, which will supply both rooms, is a Mitsubishi SCM30ZS-W (3.0KW) and the two internal…

Access to my property for building works next door
This is likely not in the right category, but I couldn't find a suitable one.... I was asked to comment on a planning application. I didn't object. The plans are about to get underway. Yesterday I had a meeting with the builder who first of all tried to convince me that my interpretation of the plans was wrong. When this…

Clover mites driving me mad!
3 or 4 weeks ago I adjusted one of my double glazed units that had dropped slightly. In the process I noticed some tiny red spiders outside - I accidentally squished one and was surprised that it actually stained the white uPVC. I've found out that they are clover mites and they are harmless to people, pets and structures.…

Insulation Grant Wales - Grantiau Cymru
My daughter had a cold caller at the door from Grantiau Cymru today. They claim to be able to do loft and cavity wall insulation as well as any damp works in her house free of chage irrespective of her income as she suffers from asthma. She has looked into insulation grants before but is just over the financial threshold.…

I need help finding or fitting a vanity unit to fill a 1640mm wall – any tips?
Hi all, I'm doing a full bathroom renovation in just over a month and starting to buy the final bits. I’ve pretty much got everything sorted, but I’m stuck on the vanity unit. Ideally, I want something that spans wall-to-wall — mainly to make cleaning easier and give it a seamless look. Below is our current plan, but the…

Overflowing Downpipe
Hi all, during
heavy rain the external shared (my responsibility) rainwater downpipe overflows. It’s a metal/iron downpipe
into a concreted gutter. I’m not
sure it can be opened without breaking it apart. I think the
leaking could be due to two issues – Blockage in
the bend into underground clay pipe feeding into sewer Or…

Obtaining garden slabs that are owed to us.
We engaged the services of a landscaper to upgrade our patio and garden path up to the shed and greenhouse. We have paid the full amount in the quote but he miscalculated by about 10 slabs how many were needed. He tells us that the additional slabs, sand and cement have been delivered to his own property, but they have yet…

Has anyone else had problems with a Dualit kettle - or Dualit item?
I bought a Dualit Kettle (the Studio) which had a two-year guarantee, and as the two years ended it developed problems including being temperamental turning on, light stopping working, then in the 2-3 yr interval the lid stopped 'holding' when filling so as it falls closed you get badly splashed; the lid also can spring…

Up Front Payment ?
I asked for a quote to clear the rotting decking and remaining pond rubbish from my garden and before going ahead I asked for their payment terms. It's £1350 in all. https://proactivecleaners.co.uk/ initially asked for it all up front but have now agreed to take 75% on the booking and the remaining 25% the day before they…

Cold shower when using diverter from overhead to hose
I have had a new dual outlet shower fitted with fixed overhead shower and a hose on a riser. The pipes going to both outlets are visible (i.e. not buried in the wall - pipe to overhead goes straight up from the mixer bar and the hose comes straight down before looping up to the shower riser). The flow and temperature are…

Immersion Heater, replace inner coil or thermostat?
Hoping helpful guy as appeared on this thread will be able to advise. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1262969/boiler-immersion-vs-combi/p2 I recently had to switch on my copper immersion heater tank whilst a boiler, which controls radiator heat + hot water was being fixed over several weeks. (Incidentally…

Would you still consider buying a vented tumble dryer?
So my very basic dryer (that we got as settlement over the Whirlpool fire safety issue) has packed up beyond my ability to repair, and it's time to replace. I'm considering just getting another vented model - I know they are being phased out of the market, and based on usage, I'd probably only be looking at a 2-3 year ROI…
