If you mean a mat specifically for scraping mud and dirt off shoes before coming indoors, I use a heavy-duty rubber and coir scraper rather than an ordinary doormat.
Wickes currently have a rubber/coir scraper mat for about £10, and Argos have a similar bootscraper for around £10.50. Both have the raised coir sections that actually get into the soles of shoes rather than just wiping them, and I find they work well.
Just check whether the one you choose needs to be in a sheltered position, as some coir mats aren't designed to sit permanently in heavy rain.
