Boiler moved and doesn't work now - asking for payment

Hi

Had my boiler moved from kitchen to bedroom today and after he moved it the engineer tells me boiler doesn't work and that it was due to a fault on the boiler (it's 3 years old).

They are asking me to pay the bill but tell me boiler is still under warranty so they will come back and repair boiler at no extra cost. They fitted it originally.

As far as I know the boiler was working. It used to come on every night for a few minutes over the summer.

I refused to pay boiler engineer for now, honestly don't know if I'm being unreasonable?

However, in my opinion, moving boiler to bedroom is just mad. Ever heard of CO2 poisoning ?

Like you I wouldn't be paying the bill yet. I'm amazed they are asking for payment at this point having left you without a working boiler. I'm sure our plumber wouldn't.

It's in the spare bedroom, not one I sleep in.

I have a carbon monoxide detector too.

We've moved ours to a cupboard in the smallest bedroom which is immediately next to the hot water tank. We have a CO detector in the room. Nobody sleeps in the room. Our neighbour has done the same.

I wouldn’t be paying immediately either, at least not until they explain properly what has happened.

The sequence is rather concerning: boiler apparently working, engineer disconnects and moves it, boiler then doesn’t work, and you’re told it just happens to have developed an unrelated fault which will be dealt with under warranty.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the engineer caused the fault. A boiler can have an existing problem which only becomes apparent when it is shut down and recommissioned. But I’d want more than simply “the boiler has a fault”.

Agreed, moving a boiler in to a bedroom is not my idea of a good move. But being a sealed appliance, Carbon Monoxide (that is CO, no 2) shouldn't be a problem.

Apart from when my combi boiler is heating DHW, it is surprisingly quiet once up and running. It is range limited to a quarter of its rated output. Would still be enough to keep me awake at night….

I wouldn't pay, fix it first, and then I'll pay. That's the normal course of action.

Thank you everyone. They said another engineer will visit tomorrow. Just don't want to pay up and have them wriggle out of any repairs. Guess I'll have to wait to see what they say tomorrow.

The boiler was an absolute eyesore in the kitchen and couldn't be boxed in that is why I moved it.

I don't think you are being at all unreasonable, in that I think most folk would feel the same - the job hasn't been completed as the boiler is no longer working.

'Technically', tho', the fitters may be 'right' in that there are two different jobs here, one to move the boiler, and another to repair what might be a coincidental fault, because we do not know yet if the two are connected. And since the boiler is under warranty in any case, there should be no risk to you at all - it was either due to the move so they are liable, or is an inherent fault so they are liable.

Very strange behaviour by the company, tho'! They know they need to fix this, so to ask for payment before they have done so smacks of poor customer relations to me. Unless they had a concern the boiler-move quote may be haggled due to the 'resulting' fault?

But, seems like poor form by them.

The answer is pretty plain.

Certainly don't pay them until resolved; if you do, the next thread will be why aren't they answering my calls?
