Spent 30 years in double glazing. Here's what really happens when a salesman visits your home
So, I've been lurking on here for a while and decided it's time to actually be useful. I spent close to 30 years in the home improvement industry — double glazing, windows, doors, conservatories the lot. Trained salespeople, managed teams, sat in on more kitchen table appointments than I care to remember. I'm not in it…

Detaching Toilet Seat Fittings
The fixings have become loose, but after taking the seat off, I'm having trouble lifting the metal covers to get at the screws to tighten the fixings. As it is a bit loose I can get a screwdriver under it, but the metal cover seems to be thin and stuck to the plastic piece inside. It just lifts as a whole. I'm worried…

Visibility splays
I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to the following? I can't ask highways as they'll immediately go to a high site visit fee and i think that i know the answer. We have been asked to provide a visibility splay map for a driveway exit from our property. I can see that a 60mph road has approx 160metres splay…

Solar panels cleaning
I had a quote to clean my 8 solar panels for £100, so I am thinking about buying a 7m water fed brush, around £40 on ebay. Pigeons perch on my aerial, that is why they need cleaning, they haven't been cleaned for over 2 years, I should really pay someone to move the aerial.

Ryobi Pole Saw OPP 1820 - Keeps cutting out
Pole Saw is 4 years old with hardly any use. Tried using (battery fully charged) chain turns a few times then cuts out, release trigger, then press again, works again for a few seconds & cuts out again. Cleaned the connections, although there did seem to be oil on them!! Emailed Ryobi, they don't want to know or even offer…

New boiler to replace Worcester
My current boiler Worcester 28i is 15 years old so I am looking to replace it. I am going round in circles trying to find the best replacement at a good price (not necessarily the cheapest) with the best warranty. Or should I look for a guarantee rather than a warranty? In my 80th year I don't want to get it wrong- so much…

Keeping fountain clean
We have a small fountain in our open porch. We want the water to be crystal clear, but it was full of algae when we returned from vacation. I’d like to add something that will stop that. We have young grandchildren who sometimes dip their hands in, so it needs to be safe for them. I’ve ordered some hydrogen peroxide. Is…

Plasterboard finish?
The chap who is adapting our bathroom has had to build a false wall of 4x2 and plasterboard. He seems to be assuming that he will fill the joins between the sheets, then we will simply paint the wall. Is that right, or should it be skimmed with plaster?

Small damp patch on external wall after heavy prolonged rain - who to call?
Hi all, I have noticed that after prolonged heavy rain, my outside wall gets 2 damp patches either side of the chimney break just under the roof. I have circled on the picture attached where they appear. I am not sure who I would need to get in to look at this, a brickie or a roofer? I can't see anything obvious but…

blocked pipe - who/what do i need?
ok so I know it's plumbing but is this a plumber's job? Our kitchen sink gets plugged occasionally. We try to be very good about no grease down the drain but obviously there is inevitably some. Probably not helped by coffee grounds. We've not dropped any metal skewers down it but something is causing problems. OH dumped a…

Water Stain on ceiling

The professionals highlighted the fact that water might have been coming down top of render and behind it causing some…

Ceiling fans for normal light fittings
Seen these on TikTok shop. The idea of them looked decent. I didn't know they were a thing (for normal light units). As I don't buy anything from TTS I headed over to Amazon to take a look. Something like so. I'm pretty sure our light is a B22 but I'd need to check. Most of the ones I see on Amazon though get under 4 star…

Front wooden door cracks
Have taken off winter cover of front house door. Needs a clean and probably paint job. All the inner panels have cracks in their middles all the way through. Pictures not very clear but the cracks go all the way through to see light on other side. Will I eventually need a new door or are there remedies. All seem strong so…

AO membership, how difficult is it to cancel?
I'm thinking of buying a washing machine from AO and since I'd be adding on all of the installation services (I'm disabled) it would be cheaper if I get their membership. However I'm always hesitant to get a renewing membership, especially since it says you have to phone to cancel. Has anyone got experience of cancelling…

Can someone explain what these are for ?
A family member recently bought a house with one of these poking out of the ground just inside the front driveway perimeter. I assume it is related to the drainage ( it is close to a manhole). I have seen them before ( sometimes taller ), but have often wondered about their function.

Extractor fan ducting
I need to replace our bathroom extractor fan. I'm looking at a manrose MF 100T inline fan which states 100mm inlet and out let . If i buy 100mm rigid ducting will they mate together or do i need an adapter ? I know in the past I have used 100mm Flexi ducting on same Fan and it was a real struggle to fit ducting.
