Bed bug issues
Hi all, Apologies this may get long. I live in a 2 bed house with my 2 kids and husband. A few months a go I started getting bites on the back sides of my arms up to elbow only. Not always but every so often. At the time I put it down to hives. I also looked for all the tell tale bed bug signs and the bites were more like…

Slow draining bathroom sink
Hi everyone, I've got a little issue with my bathroom hand basin. When I use the water, the first litre or so drains away with no issue, but after that it backs up, draining about half the speed it should. I have tried a chemical unblocker a few times with no success, I had the exact same problem about 5 years ago, and…

Replacing just double glazed units - Thoughts?
Hey everyone, Our windows at the front have some units which have gone, otherwise the windows are alright. Has anyone had theirs replaced and got any feedback on the process? It looks like it might cost say 300 quid per unit, so, for a three window area like my daughter's bedroom I'd not get much change from a grand. I'm…

Plaster work after an electrical chase
Hi, i'm having a rewire and the first step is tomorrow where the lads do the chase near all the switches and sockets. All the walls are wall papered, everything was decorated ten years ago. The electrician has made 6cm wide vertical column strips where the chase needs to cut. The plasterer has been and asked will 2-3"…

New Vacuum recommendations please
I have a Dyson, it's crap. The hard floor head sucks up some bits and redistributes the rest. The carpet head doesn't seem to get into the edges at all. I've had it serviced, cleaned the filters and it's still crap. What is a good alternative? I prefer cordless and have a largish house so short battery time is no good. tia

Gas safety question
I have a rental that is managed by a letting agent. Around 16 years ago, the gas fire (fitted 1989) was removed and the gas pipe capped off. It was capped off just to the side of the fireplace. The letting agent has over the years instructed his gas engineers to cap it off as close to the mains as possible, after my…

Fix damaged plasterboard around TV
Hi, When fitting a new TV, I damaged the plasterboard. What is the easiest way to repair this? Polyfilla, sand and paint? How do I prevent it sticking to the TV without taking it down again, if possible? Thanks

Blinds for patio / sliding doors?
So I've had a look here https://www.leamingtonblinds.co.uk/news/the-best-blinds-for-sliding-glass-doors-and-patio-windows/ And I'm not sure what's perhaps best for a patio door ie: I could have a perfect fit blinds and one could have the blinds "shaded" even if you open the door to slide it and it's more visually appealing…

Fly tipped waste including asbestos on unadopted passageway
Hello I recently discovered some fly tipped waste which includes a sheet of asbestos in the passageway running behind a row of houses. I reported it to the borough council, who have said that as it has been there for a while, and is on unadopted land, they bear no responsibility for removing it; it is the responsibility of…

External cladding- what type? Insulation?
This is the front of my home- we had a garage conversation about 20 years ago, wanting to add some cladding , on to it to make it look better also to add sound and heat insulation. Some of our neighbours have had Fortex- Naturclad-Hardie Plank fitted to their properties , unfortunately non of them have a garage conversion,…

Swollen external door after 5 years.
Hi all, we installed new composite external doors at about £800 each. After less then 5 years, the door is so swollen, that one can only open it with difficulty, even the lock is hard to use at this stage. I do not know if the swelling has also caused it to tilt, or if its even warped, but the right side is clearly lower…

New windows
I am due to get new windows next week just wondering the process do they remove the frames from the outside upstairs and take it down on a ladder or bring the window through the house? I am also hoping not to redecorate but may depend how good the window fitter is?

Remove rust from bike chrome handlebars
My wife has a Dutch bike which has chrome handlebars. It’s been outside and the chrome is rusting. What’s the best way to bring it back to life without scraping off the chrome? I was thinking wire wool but it might be too harsh. Aldo what’s the correct paint to repaint the framework? Is it metal enamel? Thanks

Lockout emergency. Should I be reimbursed?
Last week, I had stepped out of the flat briefly while taking a shower, and the door accidentally shut behind me. I was left standing outside in the hallway in just pyjama bottoms, with no shoes, phone, or wallet — completely vulnerable, wet, and unable to contact anyone or travel anywhere. A kind neighbour stepped in to…

Has anyone used a double glazed window repair company?
Did you and were you happy with the costs? The money you paid was the savings more than 50%? Did the repair last? Glass pannels are big, about 2mts x 800mm x 20mm - K glass.

Money Moral Dilemma: How do I tell my neighbours I can't afford to pay towards replacing our fence?
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks... My back garden is separated from my neighbours by a fence that blew over in a storm a few months back. It's a shared fence, but my neighbours paid for it before I bought my house five years ago. They've asked me to pay for half of the replacement fence, but I can't afford to…

Dropped kerb / driveway contractor - contract?
The council-approved contractor set to drop kerb and create driveway at the front of our house has given a final cost figure for each in a text message, but says nothing else is needed and won't put anything else in writing. Am I right in thinking there needs to be a contract which details various things about the jobs? I…
