Best way to keep pigeons at bay?
They land on a roof terrace, and poo extraordinary amounts. And then they stare at you sideways, which is highly disconcerting. I've been told.Ideas for scaring them off? I've suggested one of these PIR water sprayers, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Cheese-Protector-Predators-Connection/dp/B01DACLHT2 but wonder if it'll…

I have an approximately 100 year old house, single brick detached no cavity, two chimney I working fire, good central heating. I’ve suspected damp for a while and after buying a moisture pin meter I’ve confirmed certain areas of the walls downstairs, up to our knee height are getting readings between 10 to 25%. Well, many…

oriel glass box frameless window installation
I have commissioned a bespoke oriel window in my new extension and the building inspector says it's been installed incorrectly and is the wrong size to fit the opening. The suppliers have made the aluminium frame so that it is too short to be fixed into the brickwork of the structural window opening. The fitter has angled…

Hot water from taps but not from shower (combi boiler)
Our Worcester combi boiler (30CDi) has just been repaired to replace a faulty fan. It is now working again, but while we get hot water from the taps, there is no hot water from the shower (not cold, but luke warm). Turning on the shower does fire up the boiler, but the water never gets properly hot. Any idea what the…

Advice On Bathroom Tile Paint
Hi, We are wanting to change the colour of our wall tiles in the shower to white. Would like to if possible avoid ripping the old tiles off and retiling as there is nothing wrong with the existing ones, they are just the wrong colour. Any advice on the best paint (not necessarily the cheapest as I would like it to be the…

LVT and carpet join
Hi I'm putting down some self levelling in my hallway for glue down LVT. This needs to join to carpet in the lounge which will be renewed later. There's a double gripper rod in the doorway as there was carpet in the hallway too. Just wondering if this can be reused as it's pinned down through Thermoplastic tiles. I guess…

Can Mitre Saws cut cardboard?
A bit of an odd one for you. I have a need to start cutting cardboard tubes (the sort you get when you buy posters, etc). An actual cardboard core cutting machine is about £4k so in the spirit of saving money, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative. The blade on the dedicated machine has no teeth and is more like a pizza…

Fence put up between on shared driveway
Just came home tonight from work and the neighbour has decided to put up a fence along the shared drive way without my knowledge. I have owned the house for 20 years (rented out the last 15 years) and have only decided to move back in April to do it up and live in with my family. There has been a few words from the…

Viessmann annual service for waranty
Hi, the safe gas engineer who usually services my boiler told me today Viessmann requires a full strip-down of the boiler for their annual service, which amounts to about 2h and costs about 250 in private. He advised me to book a service with Viessmann directly as it would be cheaper. This is my second service and the…

Best flushing WC - has anyone got a vortex?
We have to replace a 20+ year toilet which always flushes well (presumably because it's using so much water) When we replaced our downstairs loo with a 'water saving' one - when regulations changed - it has never properly cleared poo away...my husband might continue to flush 3 or 4 times...then finally empty a bucket in…

Removing ceilings to save money on re-plumbing and re-wiring quotes
By removing all ceilings in the house, will I save a significant amount of money on quotes from plumbers and electricians for re-plumbing and re-wiring? Forget the cost of replacing these ceilings for now, and the idea of access via the floorboards - I'm just wondering if having full access from below is likely to…

How to fix low water level in toilets
We have three toilets that are very low, one "normal style" and two that are integrated. I am not a DIY person at all, Dad was the one that always did these jobs when needed, however he has dementia and is unable to help. I have looked at lots of youtube videos and posts on this forum, but they all seem to show a different…

Cover for old 4" soil pipe
Looking for a cap to cover the upright soil pipe to stop the rats from getting out: this passes through the roof and vents from the toilet outlet. It appears to be 4" cast pipe but most of the fittings I find are 110mm which I presume will not fit.
