Magnaclean or power flush?
Our 17-year-old Worcester Bosch combi boiler has broken down (both fan and pump need replacing), so we're looking at getting a new boiler installed. My question is: how important is it that we get a power flush done before installing the new boiler? The rads were last power flushed 17 years ago when the current boiler was…

exterior self-levelling compound - how to get rid of pour lines
I have used Setcrete Exterior self-levelling compound to create a flat
surface for tiling my front path from street to front door. It went well but
there are some pour lines left over and one or two bumps. What is the best way to get rid of these? Should I do another very thing

Buying a permanent gazebo
Has anybody installed a permanent gazebo where it is bolted into the ground. Usually made from wood or metal. Looking to create shade for the back room as it is unbearable in the heat, and that was before this week. Had looked at awnings but they were more expensive. Pros and cons. Possible suppliers. Thank you

Our shower has stopped working: did switching our thermostat off while away affect it?
We're having an issue with our 1990s-era Triton T80i electric shower where it's dripping from the shower head and we can't get hot water late at night. We have a Hive smart thermostat system which was installed in 2016 with a new boiler: this is set up to heat water twice a day for 30 minutes each time. We had to be away…

Best option for front path surfacing
We have a long footpath up to the front door (~12m) shared half and half with next door, which is currently tarmac in very bad condition. New neighbour is keen to replace, but baulked at the initial quote for replacing the tarmac (over £2k). It's an expensive area and his first house, he's moved from a cheaper part of the…

Worried sick about house problems and getting tradesmen
I am a single middle aged man who is living in my late parents dilapidated house. I have never had a job due to having social anxiety and caring for my parents before they died. I am living off an inheritance, which I am paying utility bills and living expenses. I don't have a normal life, but can pay to have some things…

Legalities of new fence erected
Hi all I’m hoping someone will come along and advise me. My neighbours took down most of their fence but left their privacy panels up and one picket style panel. We had a falling out some time before and I believe they did this in spite. I needed to put up a fence to stop my little dog getting out so opted for concrete…

Budget washing machines
Living in a high rise flat with no plumbing for a standard washing machine means my laundry goes to the laundrette which can be very expensive. Does anybody have any recommendations for a mini or portable washing machine? I live on my own so I don’t need to do huge washes every week, any ideas appreciated? Thanks

Anyone had boiler fan replaced by BOXT?
We're getting an error code C6 on our Worcester Bosch boiler, and am looking at getting Boxt out to look at it. Has anyone had any experience of a fan replacement by Boxt, and can remember the cost?

Has my new roof been installed properly?
Hi all, About 6 weeks ago I had a new flat roof installed (new timbers + GRP). From the very start, the roof didn’t look right to me - there are multiple visible patches (I counted at least 10), and I even had a leak near a drain pipe. I asked the builder to get it repaired, but the roof still looks like this (pics…

Greenhouse drainage
My greenhouse floods in wet weather. I have been advised to remove two rows of bricks from the side of the greenhouse where it slopes, dig a trench and fill with gravel. I would like some advice on how deep I need to dig, I have dug to about 8" and I am finding pieces of broken brick amongst the soil. Also I am unsure of…

Carpet cleaning
Hi everyone, In the next few weeks we are hoping to complete and move into our new home. We've decided that we would like all of the carpets cleaned before we move in. They aren't dirty so it's more a of a hygiene thing and also seems a good opportunity whilst the house is completely empty (we've been living with relatives…

Green Space Energy Conservation Ltd
Hi, We have had our conservatory roof done by the above company. Have no problems with their work and am very pleased with the result. My concern is the warranty given of 3 years for the roof panels. We paid a considerable amount for this roof and am quite miffed we missed the 'small print'. However the installers and one…

Gas still coming out of gas ring (hob) when turned off.
I have noticed that when I turn the gas ring off there is still gas coming out - its registering on my little pen gas detector. Is this normal? I am using a Rangemaster duel fuel cooker. Renovate or demolish?
Hi all, Currently speaking to architects about renovating my house, after waiting a while to save the budget of 400k (3 bed detached Zone 6 London). One architect mentioned that with the budget I have and plans I envisaged for the house, that it would be better to demolish the house and build it from scratch. He estimates…

What type of paint would be good for internal walls ..
washable and hard wearing .. The decorators had used Dulux diamond egg shell on the internal walls and ceilings and the result were disappointing and they said that the paint was the problem as shows all imperfections and Vinyl Matt would have been better. I then tried to DIY, and used Dulux Trade VInyl Matt on the areas…

Cracking mortar on brick? Is this a big problem?
Hi. I am looking at buying a house, which was built in1900. It's an end of terrace. I have just been for a second viewing and I have noticed these cracks on the outside wall, close to the roof tiles. Does this look like a big problem. I want to have a survey done, but wondering if this would warrant a more in-depth survey?…

Only place I can safely put blinds in bedroom is in the pvc of window frame,
But doing so means I cannot open the windows, well they open but a few mm at most I have managed to open them fully but then I cannot close them without lifting blinds off their sides which is a nightmare. Thinking of adding a tiny piece of wood each side of window meaning I have around a inch gap to open the window, as is…
