New kitchen

Hi

Wondering if this is red flag:

Local company came out to measure my kitchen. Pretty small 6 units, 2 x doors for the split pantry, 1 drawer, worktop, sink and tap.

They've quoted £3k. Does not include fitting they suggest this will be around 1k.

I asked for a breakdown of their quote as it seems high (to me) it's mid range I'm going for.

They said they won't provide a break down of the quote until I pay the deposit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I wouldn't trust them if they can't even provide a breakdown of the costs. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

Thanks - they didn't include the pantry doors, even though I specifically asked about them, so that might be extra. Anyway they were supposed to call back today but haven't done, hopefully dodged a bullet.

    Good reviews online too.

    Thanks again.

I thought that was suspiciously cheap!

Six units, worktop, sink, plus trimmings - £3K doesn't sound too bad, if there was a breakdown*. I paid £1800 for a similar number of units, pan drawers, worktops (one was 900mm wide before cutting down), flooring & sundries. But I was shopping round at the lower end of the market.

*) Without a breakdown of cost, how are you to know what is included, and what is extra.

Thanks I got around 2k just looking at online B&Qish range. Extra 1k may well be justified but I don't know enough to say.

They already missed off pantry doors so I don't know what else was missed off in the quote.

This is 3rd kitchen fitter I've tried others didn't call back.

This isn't going to be easy 😕

Try DIY Kitchens - They often get a favourable mention here, although I've not used them myself.

With my small kitchen, I used drawer line units where I could, and had one large pan drawer (900mm wide) unit - The latter stores all my saucepans, crockery, and useful kitchen tat in the top drawer.

Cupboards get used for food storage, and drawers for small items that are used on a daily basis.

I have a DIY kitchen and the build quality is very good, units come ready assembled with 22mm doors. The only possible drawback is they have very specific delivery criteria and you have to have somewhere to put the units if they are not fitted straightaway. I used cheap flatpack B&Q ones in my garage and they are nowhere near as robust.

DI Kitchens have a really good product, but the problem you may have is in finding a fitter willing to work with them. It is a little bit awkward for them, having to deal with the delivery - and redelivery of any missing items - rather than having a local place you can go to as with the likes of Howdens (soon to be DIY Kitchens' new owners, but with a very different business model).

If you've already been struggling to find a kitchen fitter even when they were able to supply and fit then this may make it harder still! OTOH if you've been looking for a supply-and-fit kitchen company then you might get lucky and find there's an independent fitter who'll happily work with DIY Kitchens. You won't know unless you check!

Thanks all. Got Howdens coming next week so see what they quote. Also a couple of kitchen fitter numbers.

Wickes got back with a quote of £10k, not kidding. And it was all the low end stuff too.

I've looked at DIY kitchens before they seem very good. On my radar if Howdens are too expensive and if I can find a good fitter.

    Thanks again
