its actually called white spirit. we used to use it for degreasing trucks ready for respray. its horrible stuff. what you have to do now is get some paint stripper. also horrible stuff. failing that leave it to the professionals.

What type of paint has dropped onto fireplace?

Is the paint water or oil based? The problem with limestone is that it's very porous, so the paint can soak in below the surface. If it's a water based paint you can try a soapy water wash.

    Photo, Sheila?

As said, limestone is porous, and also pretty soft, so care is needed.

don't know how to post photos! its Valspar matt paint from B n Q, I did try some more white spirit last night and faded a lot. Wonder if to apply some more and instead of rubbing it off leave it on for a while? Thanks everyone

Most Valspar is water based, so warm, soapy water is better for a clean up. White spirit is for oil based paints.

When my beloved got candle grease on our limestone mantelpiece, I used emery paper to remove it, starting coarse and finishing fine.

I'm not claiming this will work for you,but the result was good and barely noticeable.
