Exterior painting

Hi,

I am looking to paint the rear exterior of my victorian terrace home.

The upstairs has peeling light pink paint and the downstairs has brown/beige pebble dash with some of it flaking off. I also have brown window frames (where the previous owner has used a permanent vinyl tape to change them from white to brown) that I want to paint white. I am wondering which paint job to do first and any tips on either?

Regarding the paining of the window frames, I painted the downstairs ones with Zinsser All Coat Exterior Satin a year ago (took a lot of coats) and they still look ok, so I'm thinking of using the same paint, unless anyone has any better suggestions.

Many thanks,

Little Miss

Any photos of the area that needs painting?

Pebble dash is a pain to paint depending on how rough it is

As it's a terraced house be very careful why doing pebble dash as the paint will flick everywhere if you go to fast and you will get paint specks/splashes every where so be mintof your neighbours stuff in the gardens and their walls and other outbuildings.

If using ladders have someone foot the ladder while you are up the ladder as accidents happen and can fatal.

Due to all the peeling paint, you will need to spend a lot of time on preparation before even picking up a paint brush.

I doubt the previous owner did that. If you want coloured UPVC window frames, the manufacturer will laminate a thin film over the standard white profile. Two reasons for that - white is their standard production item, so not economic to stop the line, change colour, clean down etc. Also fully coloured profile ( rather than white) will tend to have more problems with weathering/fading colour. The thin laminate is especially formulated to prevent this. The laminate is still PVC based though so it should be OK to paint with the right paint as long as it is not showing any signs of peeling off.

Well worth investing i a scaffold tower if you have a lot of work to do. But do be careful - Working height is not the same as platform height. It is assumed that you'd have a ~2m reach, so actual platform height is correspondingly lower than the advertised height. And what ever you do, do NOT use a ladder from a scaffold platform.

Alternatives to buying scaffold towers is to hire one, or go for fixed scaffolding - The latter would be advisable if you need to go over a conservatory. Another option if access is good is a scissor lift or even a cherry picker.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
