PIV positive air pressure systems for dust management
Anyone tried a PIV (positive air pressure) system for reducing dust? We don't get condensation, but we live next to a main road and the dust is quite bad. We have cavity wall insulation and double glazing. We have a couple of extractor fans that were installed with the insulation. So air is coming in other ways,…

My title deeds don't mention the number of bedrooms
Hi, I've looked everywhere in my documents, but my title deeds don't mention the number of bedrooms. Is it normal? The house was extended a couple of times (loft conversion and kitchen extension), following all the legal requirements (PD planning application, certificates of lawful development and certificates of…

House Repair/Refurbishment/Renovation - Help! :)
Dear Forumites, I’d be grateful for your assistance. I have recently bought a house with which I am very happy. A Level 3 Building

Advice needed on wooden shed size
I was looking online at wooden sheds and I saw this about timber sheds: A single-skinned building can only reliably stay dry
to a certain point, and that’s why our Shed range ends at a certain point – 16’ x 10’. We believe that, when Sheds go larger than this, they begin to be
susceptible to leaking... Is this something I…

Builder damaged neighbours property - am I liable?
I had some roofing work done and the neighbour's flue was damaged. The scaffolders admitted they did this and offered to repair but the flue and boiler are old and may not be be fixable. A full replacement would be expensive and the scaffolders say it was basically broken already and was hanging on by a thread so they…

My neighbor’s side extension has been without gutters for over two years, excess water problems
My neighbor started a DIY side extension during COVID, but the project remains unfinished. The extension is about 90 cm away from my side wall, and for the past two years, they haven’t installed any gutters. When it rains, water overflows and runs down to my foundation, causing moss and greenery to grow, and the soil is…

Down pipe on rear gutter - help please
Hi I live in a detached bungalow with an attached garage built in 1962. The garage has guttering and a down pipe going into the ground and a block paving patio which encloses the pipe. The patio is sloped slightly towards the back grassed area. My neighbours garage is next to mine but not adjoining. My neighbour has said…

Reusing E10 heater cable
Hi I need to renovate a cupboard that has this Economy 10 switch cluster in the wall. It's from a warm air heater that I've taken out. There's two feeds. An off peak 10mm cable and 24hr 4mm. I'd like to, if possible use the 24hr cable for a socket, maybe for a water softener. Both cables come from above and then out…

Two flats, one mains(?), builder question
I live in a flat (converted Victorian house) and the downstair's neighbour has just started building work. Their builder turned off the mains water this morning so my water also went off. They didn't tell me in advance (although I've asked them to, along with gas and electricity). There are two two taps (stopcocks?) in the…

Looking for inspiration re low (preferably zero) maintenance solution please.
I have included a couple of pictures by way of explanation but we own a corner property and the wall which borders our rear garden runs down the side of the house. There is a strip of land currently covered with membrane and slate chippings which is situated between the garden wall and the pavement. Because it is around…

Damp patches on outside walls
I've just noticed large damp areas on the outside of my house, on two adjoining walls. Does anyone know what might be causing these? And what do I do next? There is a downpipe atthat corner but I don't know if it's to blame or if the damp is coming up from the ground. In the second photo, the patch stops at the top of the…

Marks On Walls - What are they??
Hi everyone, Not DIY savvy in the slightest so apologies if its a silly question... We moved into a property back in November and since moving in we've found these weird marks/dents on the wall, gradually getting worse. Are they just wear and tear or poor plastering previously or something more sinister? Sorry again if it…

Help with damp walls
I hope people can give me some advice. We bought a house a couple of years ago there was quite a rush to move in. We got a lot of walls reskimmed. The previous owner had a DPC done on the external walls. 1) We struggled quite a lot with damp on the chimney breasts, but since capping the chimney and putting a vent in, it…

Manhole in garden
Hi We recently moved into a new property and have been wondering why we always get flies and a terrible smell when sitting on the decking in front of the kitchen window in the back garden. We unscrewed a couple of the decking boards and discovered a manhole sewer. It wasn't sealed or anything. ...well someone had put a…

Air vent not sticking on!
Tried several times to use grab adhesive for it to stay on see all images had a closed vent removed by a friend (which I regret now). I then used polyfilla deep gap fill around the wood frame area. The only other option I see now is to drill into the brickwork (as the wood frame is too small for vent) and hope the…

Accidentally dropped USB dongle in water!!! What to do to give best chance of not damaging it?
Stupid mistake. I live in my van, and a very small one at that, so everything is on top of itself so I have to move one thing away before getting another out. I keep my electrical components in the dumbest place really, right above a bowl of water I use for washing, but had not bothered to find a better place for them. The…

Where to get a 2'3" door blank in London, or delivered quickly?
Apparently needs to be 'flush', suitable for painting, ideally trimmable to a good 10mm just in case, and 'solid' for ergo reasons - ie, not feel like a lightweight. So I'm thinking a fire-door-rated blank at 44mm thick sounds ideal.Standard 6'6" x 2'3". Thanks. Edit: Found a few options.
