Testing a 3000w infrared heater
I've got two 3000w infrared pergola/patio heaters (they came with our pergola) that I'm looking to sell and therefore want to test so I can prove they work. We have a 13a circuit in the garden (I don't know what I'm talking about but I'm sure it's 'standard' and that's 13a!) and to upgrade to 20a would be a significant…

Shower leaking
This is probably not the right area to ask. But what would you do if new shower installed 13 months ago is leaking and the plumber who fitted it is not turning up to repair it. Do I have any rights.

Is this structural engineer's advice wrong?
Hi all, hope this is the right place for this question as it covers several issues. Purchased a share of freehold ground floor flat in south London and moved in last November. It's a converted house around 100ish years old and just us and a flat upstairs in the building. It's semi-detached with next door still being a…

Issue with Roofer
Hi,I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this—please move if required. I recently employed a roofer to carry out a roof replacement which included replacing worn tiles, installing new underfelt, and replacing the flat roof. I found the roofer online and did a reasonable amount of research on them. The roofer…

Damp patches on carpet underlay
A while ago I noticed the carpet was damp around our bay window. When I peeled it back, I found significant damp patches on the underlay. The floorboards were also sagging and creaking, so I called in a reputable dampcare company, which said it was all down to inadequate ventilation. When they pulled the floorboards up,…

Getting frame sealant into an inaccessible gap
Is there a clever way to get frame sealant into a narrow gap at the base of a conservatory? The gap is between the bottom of the frame and a sill that runs all the way along the outside of the base (see diagram). There is very little clearance between the sill and the ground beneath, so there's no way to get a sealant…

High quality sheet vinyl 'tile' flooring?
As heading - is there a source of high quality, sheet vinyl flooring in a tile design? By 'high quality', I mean convincing - ie it must have rebated 'grout' lines, and a texture to reflect the pattern. Not necessarily this particular design, but an idea of the type of pattern and 'tile' size: Thanks.

Advice on safes please
I am considering getting a safe and have asked my long term electrician to install it if I get one, as I'd want him to check the drilling and bolts will not damage any hidden wires or pipes. I am looking at AIS/insurance company approved safes, plus like the idea of one that is fire and flood resistant also. Recently, I…

Small curved front bay window quote £650
We have had an accident with a tree branch smashing a curved glass window on the front of the house, (1 pane of the four in picture) size approx. 11 inches by 32 inches (across the curve) but the only people the tree contactor can find to replace say it will cost around £650 I wonder if anyone knows any one who could…

Which cordless vacuum cleaner, will consider corded again
We have three of them. The cylinder types are powerful but more cumbersome, and are used on the stairs, which is the only part of the house with carpet. Atm, we have a corded vacuum cleaner, it was cheap, it's ok, has a 7m cord IIRC. Had brill reviews, but pretty useless but does pick up dust, daily dust easily, but not…

Access to my property for building works next door
This is likely not in the right category, but I couldn't find a suitable one.... I was asked to comment on a planning application. I didn't object. The plans are about to get underway. Yesterday I had a meeting with the builder who first of all tried to convince me that my interpretation of the plans was wrong. When this…

Sim Card for Burglar Alarm
Hi all, I've recently had a new alarm installed and it has a slot for a SIM card so it can dial our phones if the alarm is triggered. I was looking to get a pay as you go SIM and stick a fiver of credit on it so it's got enough to dial out if needed but hopefully any calls will be few and far between and I believe that a…

Vax Carpet Cleaner - Unrepairable?
I've been having trouble with a Vax carpet cleaner so I contacted their service department. The agent diagnosed the problem as "This sounds like an internal fault", then when I asked how to get it fixed he replied "We would only be able to offer a discount on a new machine for you. We are unable to offer any repairs to…

Damp patch in loft room
Have this leak in my loft room that only appears when it pours. Roofer has recently repointed the chimney stack. Since then the leak has eased off but I can still feel the ceiling getting damp when it rains, starting where I’m pointing. Been recommended that the ridge tiles need doing, I’m worried that this won’t fix it…
