Paying a deposit for bathroom materials pre-installation
Hello! I'm having 2 x bathrooms done by a bona fide LTD company. Within the terms is a request for deposit - several thousand pounds - via a BACS payment. How safe is this if, for example, the company went bust before the installation date in 8 weeks time? Many thanks in advance for any input / guidance.

Best app for categorising past spending
What's the best app for quickly categorising and analysing my spending over say the past 2 years? I would like one that connects to my bank account (I just have one, with First Direct). I would like an app that will pull in past data and categorise everything itself, with an option for me to change the categories or define…

Best budgeting app for UK bank accounts in 2026?
Can anyone recommend a good budgeting app (that's not YNAB) that can connect with multiple UK bank accounts and help me track my cash flow so I can identify areas where I'm overspending? The well-known big names such as Quicken Simplifi or Monarch Money seem to be mainly America focused with little or no support of UK…

First Direct Closing First Directory, who offer similar?
Received a letter today from First direct about them closing the First directory that we pay for. We are going to loose holiday insurance, phone insurance, break down car cover etc. No reason to stay with them now as their interest rates are not that competitive. Who else offers a similar service to the First Directory?

Nationwide New Look
The "improvements" Nationwide have made are far from helpful. I tried to stick with the new version, but a few minutes and a few problem have induced me to switch back. 1 Views are much more spread out/ Much more scrolling needed to reach the section you want 2 Taken away the ability to hover over a menus and see a list.…

switching deals are really once in a lifetime now.
Cant believe this. I had a business bank account with barclays over 3 years ago. Account has been closed, maybe I should have asked them to erase my online banking data too. But I didn't do that. Anyway, a pretty nice £400 new account/switching bonus came about with braclays, thought I'd go for it and the online banking…

Stuck in a loop opening Barclays account
I’m trying to open a Barclays account via their app to get the switch offer - I’ve tried twice now and reach the same roadblock. It reaches the final stage then says “We need to check a few more things” and I should come back later. A few hours later I get a text message saying “we’ve completed our checks, login to the app…

Sharing the cost of living with a partner
I live with my girlfriend in a house which I own without a mortgage. I was lucky to be able to buy it with savings from a previously high earning career. It is a small house and was bought cheap in a cheap part of the country. Due to change of circumstances I now have a low paid job which no longer covers the bills. My…

Cheaper Radio Times Subscription
I was horrified to find my elderly, web-unconnected Mum was paying £128 every 6 months for a Radio Times print subscription, when the standard price on their web site is £65, or £55 if bought as a gift. So I attempted to cancel on the web site and was offered a retention price of £27.50, which I decided to accept.…

Downloading transactions from Barclays
Hi - I recently opened an Avios Barclaycard. I'd like to download a .csv file (or equivalent) of all transactions over a set period (e.g. prev calendar month) like I do with accounts I hold elsewhere, in order to run/analyse my budget. However, I can't seem to do this. The Barclays App doesn't seem to allow it and when I…

Extra checks before sending insurance payouts — worth it or overkill?
Following on from a recent thread I had about Open Banking apps, I’ve been thinking more broadly about payment safety from a cost and error-prevention point of view. In a small claims setup, payouts are usually sent directly to the bank details provided by the claimant. It generally works fine, but there’s always a risk of…
