Helping mum move to sheltered housing
My mum is 81 and we are in the process of applying for local authority sheltered housing. She owns her current house outright but doesn't have much on an income beyond her pension and a small widows pension from my dad. She is quite concerned about how she will pay her rent but also concerned about her house sitting empty…

Do you get frustrated at people throwing money down the drain?
A close relative recently came into a modest inheritance which although not life changing is far more than he has ever had before. I suspect it's the first time he has had more than a few pennies to his name and he still works at probably around the minimum wage. I somehow suspected this would be quickly wasted away. I…

Clothing retailers
Hello all My Mum who's in in her 70's often complains that it's getting harder and harder for her to buy suitable clothing that she likes. The popular High Street shops (including M&S) often cater for the younger market of shopper. She never wears trousers and often prefers the on piece style dress. Often the items…

Is there a 60+ age verification card?
I was recently asked to prove my age (which is greater than 60 as it happens). I couldn't, which led to my losing a concession. For the future, so that I am not impelled to carry a passport with me at all times, I was hoping to find an official looking card bearing the legend 60+. When I search for this online, it turns…

what do single over 60s do for entertainment and holidays
I am newly single and an optimistic person with quite a zingy personality, at least I give the impression of zest to other people. I keep myself busy on most days and have some excellent hobbies. I do need to get out and about more but not aimless shopping. I was thinking of national trust but it wouldn`t be the same to…

Summer wedding
I would like some ideas on what to wear for a summer wedding celebration, please. First, a private ceremony for bride, groom and witnesses only, I am one of the witnesses. Then a few days later, an afternoon/ evening party for family and friends, outside if the weather allows. Being MSE minded I am reluctant to spend a…

She has finally agreed to have a walk in…

Adjustable beds
Hi Please can anyone recommend a company that make adjustable beds? I have looked at Amberley and others but am not sure about the mattresses as they seem to be foam or latex and I wonder if they will lose shape and also make the sleeper too hot. The person needing this weighs 18 stone, if it helps, and suffers with bad…

Touring caravan or campervan
I know this really belongs in the 'holidays' board, but I have a v strong association between being over 50 and having a caravan! And this board is friendly. And I know there are people here who have caravans... So, anyway.....we've been doing camping holidays for over 40 years, but are beginning to think a bit more…

Cheap Lurpack Butter
I was in Asda in Poole yesterday, and, as usual, a 500g pack of Lurpack Butter was £3.25, or on special offer of two for £5. However, immediately above these were 1Kg packs of the same thing for £3 each! I bought two. So take your choice - £3.25 for 500g or £3 for 1Kg. Talk about crazy pricing! But get it whilst you can.:)

Dad is in a permanent care home and is self funding. He is running down his savings of about £40,000. His income is £60 state pension, £80 private pension and £81 DLA a week. We have been told he may get pension credit but the amount of paperwork and stress it is causing us trying to sort it is a nightmare. Is it worth…

riser recliner chairs
I'm wondering if anyone has inside knowledge on riser recliner chairs for the elderly/disabled. Looking for one for my 85 year old Mum. I know she is entitled to tax relief on it, although is that only certain companies that offer that? Looked at the one at the ideal home show and it was about £1600! There are plenty…

Advice about card crafting,please?
I love card crafting. I like to recycle as much as possible. I use a rotary trimmer quite a lot. I got one from Lidl, last year. I was not 100% happy with it but it did the job. It has unfortunately broken and I want to buy a new one. I would like recommendations, please. I would like one which does differring cuts, i.e.…

What's it like when your OH stops work?
I’m not sure if this is the right place to post, or even what I’m asking! DB (in his mid 50s) has just heard that he has had his application for a 6-month career break approved. He’d originally wanted to leave his job all together, he’s completely fed up with the place and had been having more and more bouts of insomnia…
