Closing down the "Widows" support thread
What a pity someone has found it necessary to ensure the closure of of the bereavement support thread. It was unnecessary. In among the "tea and sympathy" there was a lot of advice on practical matters, such as finance, funeral arrangements, life insurance, pensions, how to get through the dark days etc This could have…

Over 40s/50s/60s/70s health checks?
I'd heard about these health checks for a few years now so when, at 64, I hadn't had an invitation I thought I'd ring the surgery to be a bit proactive. The receptionist seemed a bit vague and said I could make an appointment to see the nurse if there was something I was worried about. As there wasn't, I left it. Then when…

What do you call yourselves?
A question from my husband last night got me thinking. Background, he is 56 and about a month ago left paid employment. He is not seeking another job (though he might get a small income from a hobby in the future) and he is not drawing any pension. It is all going very well so far but he last night he was wondering what…

HSL chairs website warning
Having seen the TV adverts for this company I went on-line to have a look. I remembered the site was called HSL so keyed in hsl.co.uk only to have a dangerous site warning flashed up on screen to say that Firefox had blocked this site as it contained a potentially dangerous trojan. I came out and checked the name, to find…

pensioner power
As I get older I can see that the older generations have a lot of living to do and will have a bigger and bigger say in society. And they should do - they have the most life experience and they have the time and skills to use the Internet to lobby for change - just look at WASPI which is really getting heard and have…

Letting out home to avoid care home costs?
My parents' house in Scotland has become unoccupied since my father passed away and my mother moved into a care home earlier this year. Elderly parents' partial equity release
Quite some time ago my elderly parents did a partial equity release on their home. As is often the case, it was not a good deal, but that's another story! They were advised by the solicitor at the time to do their wills, but they didn't. They are now in their 90s and I've been trying to persuade them to do wills for about…

My Mum in law does not cook for herself anymore, and I started freezing dinners for her, but now that is more or less the only dinners she eats. Trouble is I was freezing them in special Sisterna freezer to microwave plates with covers, but they take up a lot of room in her freezer. Are there any plates I can get that can…

What do you do all day?
I'm not sure whether to ask this on here or on an unemployment thread as the question would be the same! I recently gave up working full time and now work part time for a charity from home. - I suppose I sort of consider myself semi-retired. But the work is so flexible I find I have a huge amount of time on my hands now…
