Hi,

I have just turned 50 and, having financially supported an ex-partner abroad for many years was unable to buy a property when I returned to the UK. However, I have now saved a deposit and was hoping to take advantage of the Halifax Right to Buy ISA. However, I was refused when I applied. I am assuming that an upper age limit was applied...Is this the case? If so, is that not illegal? I fit the criteria in every other respect.

I doubt you would be refused because of your age.

  • Do you already have an ISA? this could be why you were refused. In which case, wait until April

I don't know anything about the RTB Isa conditions, but the refusal could possibly depend on your age if the mortgage was going to continue after state retirement age. All lenders have tightened up their criteria on mortgage lending across the board & most wish the mortgage to have been fully repaid prior to retirement age.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

There's no "Right to Buy" ISA, just a "Help To Buy" one. The only age restriction is that you must be over 16. There are other restrictions which might be the reason why you didn't qualify in Halifax's opinion.

I realise you don't own a property at the moment, but did you own one before going abroad? That might be another reason for being turned down?

  • Hi, Thanks for all your responses - very much appreciated. In answer to your questions, I have never owned a property and, whilst I have other ISAs, I have not deposited my allowance for the current tax year.
