Storing tomato sauce in jars...
I have discovered 3 bags of last year's tomatoes in my freezer, and am wondering whether to make a batch of tomato sauce to use them. However, I don't want to put that sauce back into the freezer as I'm trying to empty it. Can I store the sauce in hot, sterilised jars, as if it were jam? And if so, how long will it keep?

Old Style Daily Friday 21st July 2023
Good morning, it's looking a bit threatening outside, rain is on the way. I must apologise, last Saturday I started a thread saying I was coming back, and didn't! We were going away and I got caught up in last minute stuff and forgot about it. We've had a nice few days on the N Yorks coast, the weather was lovely in the…

breadmaker recommendations
My trusty breadmaker has finally given up the ghost (it is about 24 years old so has done me well). I'm looking for another, but I only have a small kitchen so it can't be too big. My current on is a Morphy Richards and makes 450g and 680g loaves and has a quick setting which is quite useful when I forget to put it on! Any…

Weekly Flylady Thread 10th July 2023
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the
US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's
boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately,
necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to
make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Dishwasher newbie
I've just (literally) inherited a dishwasher (my first ever, and its a Miele, oooh) and I am wondering what the most cost effective way of getting dishwasher stuff is. For example, separate cleaning stuff, rinse aid and salt, or 2-3 combined? Any recomnended brands? The manual says you can use "less than 5% acidity (?!)"…

How to defrost batch cooking, and what to eat when planning a family
Hey everyone,I haven't been active on these boards before I don't think, but I've heard good things and keep meaning to pop over. I'm a bit of a lapsed cook, as I haven't had my own kitchen at home for about 5 years now, and I was a lapsed crafter as well but have taken this up again last year. You might have seen me…

Which thread - cotton, polyester or even something else?
Hi there. My wife fancies having a go with altering some clothes - something that she has never done, but we are going to have a go, having bought a beginner sewing machine a while back not ever properly used. Just an initial question - we were thinking of buying a pack of thread that should cover most colours: e.g. SOLEDI…

Tell us about a time your MoneySaving plans were thwarted
I was tickled by this March 2023 post by @Brie (I hope you don't mind me hijacking, Brie), who encountered this situation while wombling: "I spotted a pound coin on the pavement near where I used to live and swooped down to pick it up. Someone had superglued it down. I suspect they lived in one of the nearby flats and…
