AGA query
Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help us out on something. We're having the kitchen redone, and have inherited an AGA (electric/night storage). I really wanted white quartz or white granite worktops, but the guy who did the templating of the worktop is saying that the area around the AGA might discolour due to the heat…

Energy Club - Eon v ?!
I joined energy club and was heartened that I was likely to save money. I had dual fuel with Eon and have been with them for years, my current contract runs out on 27th January. Imagine how I felt when I started getting quotes from the Energy Club recommendations. Not one single one was cheaper and in fact was going to…

Main/room thermostat
Hi, My 'on the wall' thermo is a cheap looking 'Elite' type. Two wires in from boiler. I keep having to turn it up >'click'/boiler on, then down > 'click'/boiler off, for the rads to warm up. Boiler therms all set fine. I asked the BG engineer when he came to service, about thermos and of course he wanted to sell me the…

Burning treated wood
Hi everyone I have just had some decking installed in the garden and they trader who did it had a lot of off cuts and spare bits that I asked to keep as I may be able to burn. Am I safe doing this? I know the decking boards cant be burnt as they are pressure treated and there is only a little bit of this anyway. The rest…

British Gas free electric tariff
I am on the BG free electric tariff and have just got my bill. I was wondering if any others find the bill hard to check against? I have taken readings every Saturday at the beginning and end of the free time as I thought I would be able to check against the bill but no. There is nowhere to check on the my energy portal…

Can I have an open fire?
We recently had our chimney breasts opened up to enable us to have open fires. When we tried to test it, it filled our neighbours house with smoke :-( We are looking for a way around this... our builder says we may have to have wood burning stoves instead with a new flue up the chimney, but I would much prefer an open…

Is my heating really inefficient?
I am after some advice and opinions. I've only just started properly living in my first property (a sortof 1 bedroom bungalow that's raised with a small street going under it to a courtyard). I already knew it wasn't the most efficient home being "F" rated by the agents that advertised it but as winter has set in I'm…

Should I change from oil to electric ch boiler?
We are in a no-gas village and so have an oil ch and combi hw system. The boiler is eight years old and has started to become unreliable. A couple of neighbours have electric boilers for heating and hw and swear by them. I'm tempted because of the reduced maintenance costs and being able to ditch the ugly (and sometimes…

Tightly fitted log burner
I have recently visited a relative who has had a log burner (I'm not sure if it is dual fuel or just log)fitted tightly into the recess of the stone fireplace. It only sticks out a couple of inches at most and has no air gap around it at all. Surely this is dangerous? Does anyone know whether I am right in my worry about…

How much per hour to run this boiler?
We have a Potterton promax sl 30 which seems to run full pelt, what does it cost to run? I know we all pay differently per unit, what calculation can I use to work out my gas usage? I was told it would cost me less than £60 per month to run but it's costing way more than that.

Why is Scottish Power so useless?
We moved house earlier this year and inherited Scottish Power gas and electric pre-pay meter. It took a couple of months before I was allowed to request a standard meter, and five installation appointments before they had successfully swapped them. I then had to go onto their standard tariff for one month so they could…

Name and Shame: FLOGAS increasing my LPG price by 48%
Just received a letter from Flogas indicating they are putting up the cost of my gas by 48% on January 1st. They get you into a 2 year contract then WHAM. Now then, will they top up my tank before then at the old price or will they not be able to visit my property before then? Is this legally enough notice? Maybe some…

Blocked Woodburner Flue
Had a woodburner put in just over 3 years ago. Standard installation with a standard cowl similar to this but stainless steel. http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p71603?table=no Had the flue swept every year & just a reasonable amount of soot etc removed each time. Not burnt anything any different over the 3 years so no…
