Reasonable cost for a tradesperson to replace an electric Storage heater?

Options
Hi,

Can anyone tell me what a reasonable cost would be for a tradesperson to replace an old broken storage heater (Dimplex XL18 in size - 12 bricks) with a new one of the same size? Source new one, replace existing one and take old one away.

Also does anyone know of the difference between say a Dimplex XL18 and a Creda TSR18 Storage heater. I have been told Dimplex actually own Creda and the internals of both are exactly the same, however the Creda is cheaper.

Thanks in advance!

Do you not know someone who could do this for you ? Other than turning off the electric supply it is not much harder than wiring a plug.

Assuming it is a straightforward switch of heater, then it should be very quick & simple and easily completed within an hour. So labour charge will be minimal, and I would expect it to be complete within the electricians standard call out fee, so say about £70 depending on your location.

On top of that, you will have to pay for the new heater.

Removal/disposal of the old heater may prove difficult (and so costly) as some of the really old ones had asbestos in, so I am led to believe.

Thanks for the reply, that's pretty much how I'm working it out, work to fit is fairly straight forward, but time to source heater, transport, deliver to flat above ground level and dispose of old heater (plus obviously the cost of the heater itself) need to be factored in.

It'l probably take a bit longer than an hour. You can't lift a storage heater so the old one has to be taken apart to remove it, likewise the new one has to be taken to bits, installed and then put back together again when it's in situ.

As the old one is now in bit's it's not that difficult to take it to the tip yourself.

As said it's not a difficult job and any reasonably competent handyman should be able to do it - just read the instructions.

  • Do you definitely want rid of the existing heater?

These things are ridiculously simple and other than aesthetics, there isn't much of a difference between the main types (standard/with day rate heater/with automatic controls).

A check over by an electrician who knows them can often bring the heater back to life - it might just need an element replaced or rewiring of the cut out switch - and would be within their call out charge.
