External Work - Internal TV
I'm having some external work done to a crack in my bricks. Internally, near the crack is a wall mounted TV. 1. Should the TV come off the wall prior to the work? 2. Would the Insurer pay for the removal and re-instatment of this TV (it was professionally installed to begin with)?

Effects of lower system temperature on the boiler pump?
Hi, I kept the boiler heating temperature at 55 degrees and I verified that it works well in this house, but I also noticed that the time that it took to raise the temperature by 2 degrees went from < 2 hours at 60° to 3 hours at 55°, that made the boiler hum for longer. I'm wondering if this can lead to more wear and tear…

Splitting repointing costs in converted house
Hi. I'm trying to work out how to fairly split the costs for brick repointing on a London terraced house split into flats. I own the ground floor and the other owner owns the other 2 floors + loft conversion. We own the freehold 50:50. He rents his part out to 3 tenants. They recently spotted some damp so he's been getting…

Siemens oven temperature keeps resetting
I came on here in the hope of finding a fix for my Siemens oven, as the temperature kept resetting. I'd set the oven to 230 fan, only to wander away and find it had reset itself to 160. If I subsequently put it back up to the higher temperature it would then stay at that level. I think I have found a fix and am posting…

Central heating in an extremely cold house
My heating costs me a fortune to run in winter it gets very cold inside if not on 24 hours a day if you leave the house will go to about 5 or 6 degrees and when it's as low as that it takes the house 24 hours to warm up, the Landlord is not good at keeping his properties up to the standard I don't see any other way of…

Looking to reduce road noise from old double glazing
Hi, I’d like to reduce road noise from the windows in my and my son’s room. I understand I won’t eliminate it completely but even turning it down a few dB would be good. A couple of glaziers are coming out but I want to know anyone else’s experiences as to what product works best i.e. acoustic glass, triple glazing,…

Anyone have personal experience with both dessicant dehumidifers and condesner dehumidifers?
I bought a condenser dehumidifer from lidl a while back, it was a 10L russell hobs model for £79, I saw it sells online for £120 so I bought it without hesitation. I need one because we live in a humid part of the UK, surrounded by the sea so the humidity is high. Luandry doesnt dry for eeons and thich clothes develop a…

Kuppersbusch ovens
I've had a Kuppersbusch oven for almost 22 years. It's just started to trip the electrics and there's a bit of smoke. It may well be the element which could be replaced, but is it worth paying the £143 to get it fixed? I'm concerned there might be more problems to come. They are top of the range ovens, but has it likely…

Knocking/water hammer?
I live in a first floor Victorian conversion flat. The neighbours downstairs are doing major work. In the past couple of days, I've been hearing a kind of knocking sound (a bit like when a window is open and a shut door makes a sound against the wind) whenever I run a tap. It's never happened before. The neighbour…

Stuff in eaves - worst case scenario?
Our house was built in 1969; we moved in last year. On the survey the report mentions white ‘stuff’ stuffed in the eaves and that this should be removed as there is signs of salting/condensation on the joists. We do get a lot of condensation throughout the house too. You can see it in the attached photo. It looks a bit…

Cylinder advice
Had a combi in all the houses I rented for years, just with handset shower heads. Moved into a house with a system boiler / unvented cylinder setup (Ideal Logic Heat H24 Boiler with Prostel 150 S150PL 146l Cylinder). Bit of an ancient thermostat (Off, On, Timer, Once) with an old dial for the heating temp. Not really had…

Waterproofing plasterboard bathroom walls - Membrane OR Jackoboard + Membrane
Hi, I am currently getting my bathroom refurbished. The walls and floor were stripped completely. Due to having a solid brick wall which meant that the internal walls were very cold in Winter, I decided to put 37.5mm thermal plasterboard on the brick walls. Now, I need to waterproof the walls, especially the one around the…

How to fill hole in floor
Any advice welcome. Following a leak that penetrated under the floor tiles, it seems to have weakened a probably already weak floor. FYI the floor has underwater heating, though haven’t encountered any pipes thankfully. I have removed most of the loose material. Anyhow, what would you recommend I use to fill it? Don’t want…

Cavity wall insulation - fiber vs beads
I need to insulate cavity walls for 1960s detached house. It seems suppliers who do beads push for beads and those who do fiber/mineral wool do for fiber. From consumer's point of view, which one is better? I have done customary internet search but still not able to figure out if one is clear winner over another. I have…

Old radiators won't turn off even with thermostatic valve at 0
I have two older radiators with Bulldog thermostatic valves. They were in the house when we moved here so no idea how old they are. First, the bedroom radiator would not turn off when I set the thermostatic valve at 0. I watched a few online videos on removing the valve head and I unscrewed it thinking it might be broken.…
