UPVC Window Handle - advice please

Options
Some of the handles on my windows look worn and are difficult to open, being stiff and screech when opening. Can they be maintained in any way, ie taken apart and oiled, or do they need to be replaced?

Any advice welcome.

I wouldn't use oil, which is messy and attracts dirt.

I use a dry PTFE lubricant spray such as GT85. It does the job perfectly.

That handle has a square pin which operates a sliding locking mechanism in the body of the window.

If it’s stiff and noisy it might not be the handle that needs lubricating but the locking mechanism.  Google lubricating upvc window and you’ll no doubt see what I mean. A picture….thousand words. They can be lubricated with oil or a teflon lubricant like GT85.

If you want/need to replace the handles then it’s simple. Undo the two screws (one you can see in your pic and the other is behind the blanking plate on the opposite side which you can flick out with a sharp knife or screwdriver). You’ll need to get two things right when ordering a replacement; 1. The length of the square pin protruding from the back of the handle in mm 2. Is it right or left handed operation.

Do you have a window doctor in your area?
We have a very good one that can sort all windows and doors out in a short time.
Best money I spent on the house and it wasn't a lot.
She can also replace things and advise on maintenance
I spent ages fiddling with locks and windows with some success but she did bits I didn't realise I needed until everything worked 🙂

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Or just your local window company/installer will often offer a service, to get stuck locks moving/replacing and various other maintenance jobs.

I suggest you look for a YouTube video.
Relatively easy to sort out and/or change handles.

Once you've watched the YT vids, decide if you are up to it and if any doubts,
ask a window supplier for a quote and you will not believe the massive savings.

Some good DIY aka 'Handyman around on the traders' site; they cost a lot less for most items
when compared with someone who does one type of work.
Look at their reviews, and if/when you contact them, ask them if they have experience of sorting out or changing handles and take it from there.

    Don't use WD40 as messy, use a Teflon-type spray.

By looking on YT videos , over the years I easily changed several Euro Cylinder type locks to better quality and better fit. I've also recently changed a multi-lever lock to the front door - done many handles for myself and the family. Daved us a few hundred pounds and IMO, done a better job than many but I guess I spent more time than a trader would have but worth it in every way.

Just Google and see if you can save a load of money or at least have a better insight and idea of how much someone should be charging.
