Replacing cooker hood/extractor fan lining

Is this a leak or damp?
Firstly, I'm quite clueless about DIY/home matters - I've had marks on part of the main room ceiling in my top floor flat (with a loft above) for a month or so, but they've particularly worsened over the last week. There's no water coming in through the ceiling but the brown marks are a bit colder to the touch than the…

Council have asked for walls to be prepared...
We live in a council house and recently had a counter top shorted to fit in a larger cooker. During the work, an electrician told us we'd have to have the cooker switch moved as it should never have been above the cooker area in the first place. We spoke to a Housing Inspector who told us that wouldn't be an issue but we'd…

Inherited an old shed
Hi there, I'm hoping for some advice from those who know far more than me about sheds. I've just moved into a bungalow that has been empty for a couple of years and have inherited a small shed and I'm wondering whether it's worth repairing or to be honest 'bodging up' to get a few more years out of it and until I can…

Harvey water softner
I have already have a water softener in my attic, it was done by the previous owner. Harvey said they can install it over there, or they can install under the staircase, which is... So if we install under the staircase, so the water softener will work for entire kitchen as well as the top bathroom. But if I install in the…

Fence Installation Costs UK: DIY or Professional?
Hi all, Has anyone in the UK had new fences put up recently? We’re looking at four standard 6' x 3' panels – nothing too fancy, as we’ll add lighting/plants later on. I was thinking of ordering the panels online and fitting them myself, but my partner feels it would be safer to hire someone to supply and install. Roughly…

Howdens kitchen advice
I’m having a kitchen designed by Howdens fitted at the moment. The fitter has put the units at the correct height however I was hoping that the wall cupboards would have totally covered the electrics and I could just box in the cables. At the moment the top of the electrics stick out which is an eye sore. I’m thinking to…

Control radiator…?
Hoping someone is able to explain, we’re a little confused. We moved into our house in April, had the boiler replaced - now a combi. Boxt did our boiler install, all good. Dining room is now husbands office and that radiator doesn’t have a thermostat control on it. When he asked Boxt, they said it’s the control radiator…

Which cordless vacuum cleaner, will consider corded again
We have three of them. The cylinder types are powerful but more cumbersome, and are used on the stairs, which is the only part of the house with carpet. Atm, we have a corded vacuum cleaner, it was cheap, it's ok, has a 7m cord IIRC. Had brill reviews, but pretty useless but does pick up dust, daily dust easily, but not…

Condenser vs Heat pump tumble dryer for low use
My Bosch condenser dryer has been faulty/out of use for a couple of years now. I usually have a go at fixing things myself but haven't got round to this yet. And I'm not sure it is worth the effort after a bad experience fixing my washing machine (lot of time, £50 or so on parts -basically needed new carbon brushes, then a…

Is this structural engineer's advice wrong?
Hi all, hope this is the right place for this question as it covers several issues. Purchased a share of freehold ground floor flat in south London and moved in last November. It's a converted house around 100ish years old and just us and a flat upstairs in the building. It's semi-detached with next door still being a…

HarveyArc smartphone integration
Does anyone know how the smartphone app integration with the HarveyArc water softener works? Does it actually have something in the device to monitor salt levels or is it purely a time based tracker app?

Testing a 3000w infrared heater
I've got two 3000w infrared pergola/patio heaters (they came with our pergola) that I'm looking to sell and therefore want to test so I can prove they work. We have a 13a circuit in the garden (I don't know what I'm talking about but I'm sure it's 'standard' and that's 13a!) and to upgrade to 20a would be a significant…

Issue with Roofer
Hi,I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this—please move if required. I found the roofer online and did a reasonable amount of research on them. The roofer…

Damp patches on carpet underlay
A while ago I noticed the carpet was damp around our bay window. When I peeled it back, I found significant damp patches on the underlay. The floorboards were also sagging and creaking, so I called in a reputable dampcare company, which said it was all down to inadequate ventilation. When they pulled the floorboards up,…
